We want to share a great recipe for Homemade Food Surface Kitchen Disinfectant.
Join us for our Spring Cleaning Challenge to Organize and Clean for a Thrifty and Healthy Home!
So a while ago, while I was in pursuit of replacing all of my chemical cleaners with a healthier homemade version, there was a product that I used and loved, but realized it needed to be replaced – especially because it was to be used around food! That was either the Clorox Anywhere Hard Surface or Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer. I loved these, I loved the idea of these, but I started to not love the chemical makeup of these.
Well, it was an easy dilemma to fix with a safe and easy recipe!
First, I love Hydrogen Peroxide. I am going to share later why this is a very sweet product to use due to it’s naturally disinfecting and deodorizing properties, but for now I will share the recipe with that article on this product to soon follow.
I use this product in my fridge, the table, kitchen counters, etc. It is really intended to be like the Clorox or Lysol Food Surface Sanitizer where it isn’t so much cleaning, but rather disinfecting and deodorizing after cleaning. I will wipe the counter with a soapy rag, but then wipe it again with this! I love it for my fridge especially!
How to make Homemade Food Surface Kitchen Disinfectant
So here’s my personal Homemade Natural Food Surfaces and Kitchen Area Disinfectant and Deodorizer.
Here’s the ingredients needed:
- Funnel if needed
- Any size spray bottle, so adjust recipe accordingly as this is based on a 20 oz. bottle
- 3/4 cup of water
- 1 1/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 8 – 10 drops of Lemon essential oil
- 8-10 total drops of Cinnamon and Cassia oils (or the cinnamon cassia blend)
- AND…if you have Oregano Essential Oil…. add drops of this too! BUT…be aware that the smell of adding Oregano is not very good, but effective with the others as well.
The reason why I use all of these oils is that they are all safe (just like many other essential oils) for foods, they are natural and they will naturally kill bacteria and many other microorganisms that can grow in the kitchen areas.
Here’s how to make it:
- Pour the water and hydrogen peroxide in your bottle
- Then add your drops of essential oil
- Put the lid/sprayer back on and shake until blended
Then, store this under the kitchen sink and use it as a final disinfecting/deodorizing touch to your kitchen cleaning routine!
So here’s my estimated cost breakdown for a 20 oz. bottle:
- You would be using 10 oz. of Hydrogen Peroxide which is .88 per 32 oz., so this is approximately .29 worth.
- Water, let’s just say free
- Essential Oils around $6 a bottle which will last for a LONG time (ours has lasted forever) so we will estimate around $0.30?
TOTAL per 20 oz. bottle of Homemade Food Surface Kitchen Disinfectant = .59 on the higher estimate end.
If you get any of the items on sale, it would be even less!
Here’s a printable recipe that you can put in your home binder:

Hydrogen Peroxide should be in a bottle that light can not get to. Like the original you buy. Light ruins the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide. Try using the original hydrogen peroxide bottle and put a new tag on it

That’s a great idea. It does lose it’s potency over time. You can also store it under a sink where it is dark or in the fridge where it is cold and both of those will also preserve the potency. I also make mouthwash from Hydrogen Peroxide and we store it in the fridge or in the cupboard and make “smaller” amounts so it does retain it’s potency. Thanks for pointing that out Claudene!

Is the oregano essential oil necessary for this to be effective? I’ve just started making the switch to homemade products and haven’t purchased the oregano oil yet.
cheryl
is this safe for granite countertops?

I love your bright, different colored bottles for each product. Where did you purchase them? I love all of your posts. Keep them coming! Thank you

Probably, it all depends on personal preferences and, above all, the budget for renovations, but I am a big fan of natural materials, including when it comes to the kitchen. But, of course, I understand that acrylic Corian stone will be easier to install and easier to maintain, so I’m looking at corian worktops by Total Tops. This is a non-porous material, which means it is very hygienic, since the stone does not absorb any detergents, food residues, water, and so on
