Homemade Natural Vacuum Deodorizer

Join us for our Spring Cleaning Challenge to Organize and Clean for a Thrifty and Healthy Home!

As we continue on our list of 25 homemade and natural cleaning products for $12, the next one on our list to share is the Homemade Natural Vacuum Deodorizer.  The funny thing is that this is so ridiculously easy, that is is really more of a “hey, while you are making all of your other cleaners…why don’t you just go ahead and do this real quick too!” type of idea! Plus you are saving money over the expensive vacuum beads or other store bought vacuum inserts!

How to make your own vacuum deodorizer:

  • First, drip several drops of  lavender or cinnamon essential oil onto a cotton ball, cotton square or even a bit of tissue! Whatever you have on hand already! About 10-15 drops is probably what you are looking to get onto your cotton ball.

  • Then you will see that you have a very fine smelling piece of cotton!

  • Then just stick this piece of cotton into your vacuum bag.  I do this for each vacuum bag change! You will notice a nice and pleasant scent, while at the same time deodorizing while smelling good!

We also HIGHLY recommend that you put this idea in your home binder along with many more things we will be sharing! See all of the information on this in our previous post HERE about Put Together Your Home Binder with Free Downloads.

Finally, use this new thrifty and healthy cleaning product as part of our Spring Cleaning Challenge.

Do you know if this would work in a bagless upright vacuum as well? Like if you just stick it in the cannister where the dirt ends up? I would assume it’s the same principal right?

My question is on essential oils. Where do you buy them in stores? Is the oils you use to make candles the same? Can I use those?

      Hi Wendy,

You can try health food stores in your area. They are not the same thing as the ones used for candles. Those are called fragrance oils and are entirely different! The best place online is also an easy place and we talk about that in this post here: https://thethriftycouple.com/2013/03/15/hot-deal-on-essential-oils-to-use-in-our-homemade-natural-cleaning-products/

You could use something similar in an upright bagless vac, but be warned, some essential oils can damage the kind of plastics used in the rigid dirt container’s construction and would invalidate any guarantee/warranty.

If your vac has a filter chamber with a mesh filter, it would probably be better to put the cotton wool ball in there and to wipe out the dirt container after use.

Hey, this is so clever idea! I’m often using essential oils for cleaning at home, but would never thought about that. I’m definitely trying it and will recommend it to my friends. Thank you for the clever idea!

I often visit your website and have noticed that you don’t update it often. More frequent updates
will give your blog higher authority & rank in google.
I know that writing content takes a lot of time,
but you can always help yourself with miftolo’s tools which
will shorten the time of creating an article to a few seconds.
