The 2018 Winter Olympics are right around the corner. That’s why we want to share 49 Gold Medal Worthy Olympics Foods, Games and Party Ideas with you!

I have to be honest and say we are not a huge sports watching family, except when it comes to the Olympics. That is our football. 🙂 We LOVE the Olympics. We love to learn about the cultures, memorize the flags, watch our athletes compete and cheer on Team USA.

It is a big deal in our house. And I am perfectly fine with that because it means that I only have to throw a big sporting event party every couple of years!

We also live in the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics and Alex works for a company that sponsors many winter Olympians.

We have had the blessing and priviledge of watching the Speed Skating Time Trials in our own backyard live – the trials that determine the Olympic teams (and for free since they are sponsored by Alex’s company)! We also have many other winter pre-Olympic events near us, and so although we love both the Summer and Winter Games, we really love the Winter Games because we experience so much of the hype in our own backyard.

Over the years of sharing here on The Thrifty Couple, every couple of years, you get to see more Olympic party ideas. Well, this year, we are sharing many of our ideas, along with a few others that have been shared with us from fellow bloggers.

The ideas are so fun for a DIY Olympics Party, that you can save a ton of money, while having a fun celebration. We generally have a big party for the opening ceremonies. As much as my kids would love to have a party for the whole duration of the Olympics, we kick off the season with a party during the opening ceremonies. Then we watch the events throughout the weeks following that are shown on Primetime channels. We don’t have cable, which the Olympics season is one of the only seasons we miss cable, but we get to see enough on PrimeTime television, as well as keeping up with Olympic.org website and the Olympics Facebook Page, which replays a lot of the events that are shown on the cable networks.

So we really don’t miss out on a lot, but get to enjoy the Olympic season on a dime!

We would love to share some ideas with you so you can cash in on some Olympic Sports Fandom, while spending some time with your family, and friends to enjoy the events that are coming up for Pyeongchang 2018!

Check out these 49 Gold Medal Worth Olympics Foods, Games and Party ideas!

First off, a couple of years ago – for Rio 2016, we did a roundup of ideas for a DIY Olympic Party.

The ideas apply to now or future Olympics! The Olympics are the Olympics and so the ideas never change!

One of the things that we do is take the opportunity for the Olympics to be a teaching opportunity for our kids. We really enjoy being able to learn about the Flags of the World. This is the MAIN thing we teach and review. It is especially appropriate for the opening ceremonies. It is a lot of fun to teach this, and review at the Olympics. We bought Flags of the World flash cards at the Dollar Tree store. This was a few years ago, so I am not sure if they still have them in the Dollar Store, but you can download apps that have a Flags of the World quizzes and digital flashcards.

In addition, while they are watching events, there are some fun worksheets that you can download and print.

Here are some of those:

  • Olympic Winter Games Trivia
  • Olympic Winter Games Clip Cards
  • Olympic Winter Games Alphabet Printables
  • Olympic Winter Games Printable Education Pack
  • A Kids’ Guide to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games

In addition, here’s a fun game idea to play while watching the Olympics – the “Go for the Gold” game. Print the game at Rock A Bye Parents and have some fun family time!

Plus, here are ideas we have shared in the past:

Olympic Themed Breakfast of Champions with Bagel and Fruit Olympic Rings and Scrambled Eggs and Toast Olympic Torch

Another healthy breakfast – Red, White and Blue Parfait for Team USA (see what I did there with the rhymes? Thanks to Kenarry

Olympic Ring Doughnuts

Chocolate Olympic Gold Medals

Non-Alcoholic Olympic Ring Sparkingling Drinks

Olympic Torch Popcorn Cones

The above items have been some of our favorites from past DIY Olympic Games parties!

You can also find a number of Patriotic Ideas to help cheer on TEAM USA!

American Flag Fruit Kebab

Team USA Crinkle Cookies

Go Team USA No-Bake Funfetti Cookie Dip

Team USA Olympic Party Poke’ Cake

Team USA Deviled Eggs

Team USA Candy Bark

Olympic Medal Cookies! Thanks to hezzi-dsbooksandcooks

You can turn a piece of toast and cheese sticks into personal Olympic Party Pizzas! Thanks to Kenarry

In the end, with all of these ideas 49 Gold Medal Worthy Olympics Foods, Games and Party Ideas with decor, treats, breakfast, lunch and appetizers, you are sure to have a fun two-weeks watching the Winter Games.

We will be eating, taking time to learn about other flags, cultures and countries and cheering on TEAM USA along the way – the Olympics are seriously one of our favorite sporting events!
