How To Turn Old Sweaters and Sweatpants Into No-Sew Dog Sweaters in 5-minutes

October 29 by Cassie 46 Comments

It’s that time of year when many pets start freezing – especially the cute little dogs or the short-haired dogs. And to buy a “dog coat” is ridiculous! They are often more expensive than people coats! Well, we want to share some ideas we found to be able to turn an old sweater, sweatshirt or sweatpants into a dog coat in 5-minutes!

You can even take 20-minutes and finish it off nicely and doll it up a bit, but in all reality, you just need a pair of scissors, and old sweater, sweatshirt or sweatpants and you will have a pet coat in 5-minutes.

This is the basic idea behind the project no matter whether it is an old sweater, long-sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, sweatpants, fleece pants, etc.

I have a problem with where to cut out for the legs. Do you have any hints?

I think you measure from the neck down to the legs then in the sleeve of the sweat shirt you cutit to have the neck then cut the holes. Haven’t tried it yet but really want to. I have older cats who seem to be getting chilled. I may try this for them.

I tried sweatshirt child’s size. It works great

I originally searched after I thought of cutting down a child-size sweatshirt and using the sleeves to cover 2 of my pup’s legs (probably the front). I hoped to find a pattern to do that, but this looks much easier to accomplish – less overthinking and less work cutting and re-sewing.

This is an awesome idea…I sew anyway, and can really enhance my doggie sweater using this as a blueprint. I can also make doggie coats from this also. Thanks so much for this brilliant concept.

How Cani make a sweat shirt into a covering for a boxer without holes for front legs. I have old dog who doesn’t like his feet put into holes

Great for small dogs, but what about the larger ones? I have a greyhound and a sleeve would not do for her.

Try large men’s sweat pants. Measure girth of dog then look at men’s sweat pants for a size where the legs are the width of the girth. Sometimes you can even keep the elastic/ cuff as the neck.

Was trying to think snaps or zipper to put in on a dog without messing around too much putting it on. My son’s dog is a mini labordoodle and is constantly covered in burrs, etc. and I told my son he is already part Velcro. I guess if I can make sure it’s tight enough it could work. I’ll figure it out and worth a try for sure. Thanks.

This is very unfortunate, but they are not too blame. Why did you keep it on your dog? It’s your fault for being neglectful and keeping it on your dog. You can’t go around accusing people when you’re the one at fault.

Really? Your lacked in proper pet parenting and it resulted in your poor dogs death not someone giving ideas, common sense would have prevented this. Blaming others for improper pet care is inexcusable, and they are not bad people, in my opinion you should not have a pet. Did they put the shirt on your dog? NO, you did, they they leave it on your dog? NO. I use these on all my dogs with zero problems, as the daughter to a veterinarian there is nothing wrong with “these people”, to me there is something wrong with you, and the poor doggie lost the worst:(

I’m a Veterinarians daughter, too! And I agree with your comments. This sweater wouldn’t have caused choking unless possibly she made it way too small and it didn’t fit her neck. But any rational person would have figured that out and taken it off.

You are the kind of person that ruins these harmless diy blogs where there are real pet parents out there trying to find ways to actually care for their pet baby! You must be a child in all seriousness and I hope you learn that in life there’s more to it than sitting on a screen because your life is so boring and have nothing better to do than to find a “diy dog hoodie blog” to criticize. C’mon honey you just got yourself laughed at really you should be highly embarrassed. May I suggest finding friends and getting outside the house??? God bless your sweet soul and prayers you find the right meaning for life and get on the right track. Bless your heart honey!

Thanks for the thoughts you have provided here. Also, I believe there are several factors that keep your car insurance premium straight down. One is, to think about buying motors that are inside good listing of car insurance companies. Cars which can be expensive will be more at risk of being robbed. Aside from that insurance policies are also depending on the value of the car, so the more costly it is, then higher your premium you only pay.

I believe that a foreclosures can have a important effect on the client’s life. Real estate foreclosures can have a Several to a decade negative effects on a applicant’s credit report. Any borrower who may have applied for a home loan or almost any loans even, knows that the actual worse credit rating is usually, the more difficult it is to obtain a decent loan. In addition, it can affect any borrower’s capability to find a decent place to let or hire, if that turns into the alternative housing solution. Great blog post.
