As we continue to share recipes with you that help you cut your budget, save your health and make life easier – we wanted to share the next recipe in our recipes for replacing store-bought groceries with your own versions.
Well, next up on our list is another favorite and one that is used 3-5 times per week on our meals at home. It is Italian Seasoning. Truthfully, we probably only have 1-2 actual Italian themed meals, but this recipe for seasoning is so yummy and versatile, that it fits well with most any dishes – especially any with chicken!
Many times, I have thrown chicken in a crock pot. Then in a small bowl, I will pour olive oil and Italian seasoning in a bowl and mix it up and then pour it on the chicken. This alone is AMAZING and so simple and so yummy and even healthy for you! That is just one example of dozens!
Before I share the recipe, I wanted to share where one of the best places I have found for the ingredients! Just like the Taco Seasoning, I went to Big Lots where they have the big 3-5 oz bottles of these individual spices for only $1 each! That is a GREAT price. Walmart sells the 1-2 oz ones for .50 – $1 which is another great alternative. I have made 3 batches from the Big Lots ones and they will probably last me 5-6+ batches. So it is one of the most affordable ways to go. The ones from Walmart will last 2-4 batches depending on the spice. In the end, you will probably be able to get about 35+ envelopes worth of Italian Seasoning for about $10.
Well, let’s get to the recipe and then I will share some ideas for actual Italian dishes with this mix, but the intention is to replace Italian seasonings and any mixes that you buy or canned sauces.
- 3 TBSP of dried basil
- 3 TBSP dried oregano
- 4 TBSP of dried parsley
- 1/2 TBSP garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp. of onion powder
- 1 tsp. marjoram
- 1 tsp. rosemary
- 1/4 tsp. black pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 TBSP minced onion
For spicy Italian Seasoning
- add 1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes
For extra spicy Italian Seasoning
- also add 1/4 tsp. of cayenne pepper
To make:
- Just simply mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and pour in a glass jar and use as needed
- It will store in an airtight container for 6+ months.
We have these fun glass jars with a tsp. scoop that we bought at Hobby Lobby, but we also recycle all of our glass jars for many reasons, but we use to store this in a cleaned spaghetti glass jar with a lid.
How to use this seasoning:
- You can use this as a replacement to any recipe calling for Italian seasoning.
- Also, you can use it to make your own breaded coating by mixing this with bread crumbs or a healthier bread crumb topping by combining wheat germ with this seasoning (this makes for a fabulous and healthy breaded coating!).
- You can also use it as a topping for breads or a dipping sauce for bread by mixing this with olive oil.
- You can make your own spaghetti sauce by combining tomato sauce and Italian seasoning to your desired consistency and taste – keep it thin by just using sauce, thicken it up with paste.
- You can make your own pizza sauce by combining this Italian seasoning with tomato paste and thinning it with a bit of water or tomato sauce.
- A great coating for most any meat in a crockpot, on the stove top or in a casserole dish. The best protein to mix/coat with this mix is chicken, but beef, pork, fish also taste great.
- It is a GREAT mix to use in the SOS mix for all of the spices. Not sure what SOS Mix is? It is AMAZING and the details are here on What is SOS Mix.
With the spaghetti or pizza sauce, you can use these for any recipe calling for a pasta sauce of any kind! Lasagna, other pastas, casseroles, cooked with chicken… etc!
