We quickly stopped by Walmart to grab a few items yesterday. It really was supposed to be a quick trip as we intended to be in and out in about 20 minutes. The actual shopping was quite swift…however, I had the weirdest checkout I have ever had and a literal first-time experience that REALLY SLOWED my “quick trip” down!
But before I have my little checkout rant…. here are the results of the shopping trip!
- 1 bag of tortilla chips sale for $1.78 = final is $1.78
- 2.5 lbs of bananas for .52 each lb = final is $1.30
- 18 eggs sale for sale for $2.83 = final is $2.83
- 2 Hershey’s chocolate for .74 each = $1.48. Then used BOGO FREE coupon from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -.74 = final is .74 for two or .37 each
- 2 Bags of Earthbound Farms organic carrots sale for .98 each = $1.96. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is FREE with .04 OVERAGE
- 1 Revlon tweezers sale for $2.24. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -1 = final is $1.24
- 1 Tyson Chicken Tenders sale for $4.98. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/21 Smart Source Insert – $1 = final is $3.98
- 1 Gain fabric softener sheets sale for $1.87. Then used .50/1 8/14 Red Plum Insert -.50 = final is $1.37Â
- 2 Athenos Feta cheese sale for $2.98 each = $5.96. Then used BOGO printable coupon – $2.98 = final is $2.98 for two or $1.49 each
- 3 Renuzit Neutralizer cones sale for .94 each = $2.82. Then used three $1.00/1 printable coupons – $3 = final is FREE with .18 OVERAGE
- 4 Cascade trial size sale for .97 each = $3.88. Then used four $1.00/1 8/28 PG Insert – $4 = final is FREE with .12 OVERAGE
- 1 Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread sale for $1.98. Then used .55/1 from the 8/14 Red Plum Insert – .55 = final is $1.43
- 2 Alexia Red Potatoes family size (with garlic and parmesan… yum!) sale for $2.78 each = $5.56. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is $3.56 for two or $1.78 each
Summary: The total before coupons was $38.64. We then used $17.77 in coupons, which made our final total $20.87. This is a savings of 46% off Walmart everyday low prices just with using coupons!
So here is what happened – I really didn’t have that many items and scanning was very quick (I was also in a semi-hurry, which is why there wasn’t that many things). I then handed the cashier my coupons…….
She literally read all the details of each coupon and then fished through the bags for each item. She then pulled it out, checked it and THEN scanned it (each coupon went through with NO problems as I was not using the coupons in any unwarranted way). It took me over 15 minutes to checkout! I have NEVER experienced anything like this. In all of our years of couponing, they always just scan the coupon and if there is a question, then they ask/research. I am not sure if this is something new per Walmart’s policy or backlash from the TLC Extreme Couponing show.
I wanted to ask the lady if she did not trust me because I felt like a criminal for using coupons in those 15 minutes, because they way she was researching each item/coupon made me feel like I was trying to pull a fast one on her. Even on the coupons where they was an overage, I thought she was going to give me gruff, but after she read the coupon, found the items, re-read the coupon – her response was Hmm (because it was a valid coupon/item pair)… then scanned the coupon and went through.  I was thinking the first few coupons she did this with “surely since none of them have given her problems, she isn’t going to do this for EVERY coupon!” But she kept on doing the same thing.  The line started short, but by the time she was done, it was a very long line with very frustrated patrons.
I did not say anything. I wanted to be careful to not take this out on her because perhaps this was a new Walmart policy. I just stood there while she read, searched for the item, compared each item to each coupon and THEN scanned (again with no coupon having issues!). I was also feeling embarrassed to all of those standing in line. It really was not a pleasant experience. I should have asked why she was doing what she was doing, but honestly, I just wanted it to be over as quickly as possible!
All of this to state that next time you shop at Walmart, be sure to have the Walmart coupon policy printed out and with you, because I did not have it at that time and I was worried I was going to need it. Although it was super long, I felt like a criminal until it was over. In the end, she couldn’t fault me for anything. I paid and walked out with my head low……
I would consider myself a seasoned couponer.  But that experience, if I was a newbie, it probably would have turned me off to couponing. We are curious if anyone else is experiencing these types of checkouts at Walmart?

In case those offended by (Cathey’s) statement didn’t notice, she said “her area.” She wasn’t speaking for everyone’s. With that said, I have yet to do any price-matching or major coupon use at Walmart because I just know I will have problems, and yes, our cashiers aren’t any friendlier, either. I would rather stick to my trusty Publix cashiers who know me and don’t mind taking the time to ring me up, if and when I have a lot of coupons. And, I may be missing out by avoiding Walmart, but my sanity is more important to me than saving money. I’ll take a nice conversation with a Publix cashier any day!

Jilian.. i am totally with you girl! Would rather go in for a root canal than shop at Walmart.. I love my Publix store..even if we get a grumpy cashier..once in a great while..My sanity is worth it too! Julie

I hate Walmart also, but my boyfriend gets home from work late, and a few times it was the only place open. I went in one night with ONE coupon, yes ONLY ONE, and the cashier treated me like I was a criminal. It was a legit Internet printed coupon, and she asked me where I had gotten in from, and if it was a copy and informed me that if it was a copy I’d get in trouble!!! What? The thing was in sharp dark black ink, and did not look like a copy (because it wasn’t).
Unfortunately I think the TLC show may be making the normal piddly little couponers (like me) shopping experiences hellish. Because I had another typical experience, I was at Tom Thumb grocery store with one of THEIR own coupons, torn out of the circular IN THE STORE and the cashier was scrutinizing it and went all the way to the wall where the circular was stapled up to search for the coupon and was acting like he didn’t believe me! Again, I was mad and felt like I was being treated poorly, and that I was being made to suffer un-due embarrassment over one single coupon. God forbid if I go somewhere and bundle my coupons.
So far I have had no issues at Kroger, but I do self-check out there, because they are one of the only stores that has that option around here.
The stores that never give me problems are Walgreens, CVS and Target. I think those stores are all geared to accept coupons and usually behave professionally and decently, even if they have a question about a coupon. I think they will be getting more of my business, and these other stores will be losing my business.
Maybe if more couponers band together and notify companies and tell them they will be losing our business, maybe, just maybe they will think twice, if enough of us do it!

I bought 11 items 2 days ago and used 10 coupons at Walmart. The cashier took all the coupons fine and even asked me where I got them because she wanted to use them too! I avoid coupons at Walmart though because on a GOOD day they will have maybe 5 cashiers and they aren’t always the quickest.
I’ve used coupons once at Target and they had to go digging through the bags and reading the coupons carefully but the cashier was very friendly. He told me that with some cashiers you had to hand them the coupon and the item together because they just couldn’t grasp it the other way.
I’m almost to the point of avoiding coupons at Walgreens closest to me though – I got the Gillette deal on Sunday but the RR didn’t print out. The manager said “he didn’t care go ahead and do it”. I offered to go get the product in the picture and return the one I just paid for. He made a comment about how he’d let it go this time but the other managers weren’t so lax. Stated I had to get what was in the picture. I went to another walgreens the next day and the product I bought was clearly marked as included – I checked the original walgreens today and they have the sign up too. The cashiers don’t hand me my RR I have to reach over and get them and somehow my coupons gets scanned but doesn’t get applied… I really think it just depends on the store/cashier you get. I’m going to be going out of my way to the other Walgreens because there is a nice checkout lady that actually clips coupons FOR HER CUSTOMERS!

I’ve had that problem w/ my Target, too. They need to see each item with the coupons. At least they make an attempt w/out giving an attitude…

I had a good experience last night when picking up my composition books. I guess they made a mistake and said it was a pack of five when really it cost 40 cents for one. The manager told the clerk to give it to me and keep the customers happy.

We HATE shopping at Wal-mart. It is horrible to checkout there. Thankfully, I have managed to find almost everything somewhere else for cheaper, so whenever we go it is just a small amount of stuff. We always tend to go around midnight, when there are not a ton of people shopping, but unfortunately our Wal-mart has gotten in the habit of only having ONE checkout line open. The other night, we were there and had bought some cake mixes. We were using a coupon for a free brownie mix (we even were getting the one pictured) when you bought 2 other mixes. The cashier scanned it, and then couldn’t figure out what to do next. My husband kindly told him that he had to write down what Wal-marts price was on the coupon when they turned it in, and to manually put it in the register for that price. His response: “I’ve been a cashier for over two years and have never seen anything like this” and gave us the coupon back. Realy? cause I see those coupons all the time. We insisted and showed him the products we were purchasing. Then he just stared at us with this dumb expression on his face. Luckily the manager was walking nearby, and tried to show him what to do, even though the cashier was still questioning it. Sometimes, there are cashiers who look like they can barely function, or are completely new at wal-mart (this happens a lot), but this guy was not one of them- he was in his late 40’s, and appeared to have plenty of intelligence. I understand if you are new to being a cashier that you may be unsure of policies, or exactly how to handle a situation, but if you have been doing it for several years, you should understand how the system works. And if Wal-mart is not willing to hire people who are remotely competent, then that is another issue.
Unfortunately, I know that this ALWAYS happens when I shop at Wal-mart, no matter what cashier I go to, that, and the price items ring up at the cash register is usually different than the shelf price. Knowing this, I despise shopping at Wal-mart, and it is the one errand I will put off until absolutely necessary.

This happened to me once. I about DIED! I wanted to crawl into a hole because they line behind me was very long and I felt like an idiot. I concider myself a very honest couponer and by the time I was finished I felt terrible. When I got home I called and asked to speak to a front end manager. I explained what had happened and how terrible I felt. He was very nice and told me sorry and that he would take care of it.
The next three times I went I saw her “greeting” people at the door.

Just got home from Walmart shopping trip. I gave the cashier 17 coupons worth $22 when she handed me the receipt I checked it right away because something was wrong and I found out that the cashier only scanned the 13 coupons amount of $18. I went to the CSR and they gave me the $4 value of the 4/$1 coupons. CSR told me she was glad because I caught it.

thriftycas That’s why I don’t shop much at Wal Mart the cashiers read every word on the coupons and I know the coupons I use are good. You shouldn’t feel embarrassed you know your are doing the right thing. I all so hand the cashier in groups of 3-5 instead a huge a pile and I watch all cashiers everywhere, I’ve had some missed. I write down what coupons I’m using then before I leave the store I look at my receipt and count my coupons.

It is not policy it is jsut the check out clerk. Sometimes the clerk checks the ad for every item I am pricechecking. That took forever. I have leanred when my fav cashier is there she is a couponer too and it is great and fun. Some employees feel that the company is getting screwed over after all that extreme couponing stuff and take it into their own hands. I even had a cashier once refuse to take a coupon for a item that would make it free! I stood my ground and the manager oked em she was pissed that how dare I get something for free! Overall I shop walmart alot for price matching reasons and I also do the under a dollar lists too. I like my walmart and if I forget a coupon or buy something that I have a coupon for at home they fix it on my next trip at customer service and give me cash back,.

Actually, I think that they may have had some type of meeting or something from HQ because we went there tonight and our cashier was very friendly. We put all of the non-coupon items up front and then informed him that we had a lot of coupons and handed them to him and then placed the items on the conveyor belt to be discounted with the coupons. He was shocked at the amount we had but I told him that I wanted him to be able to check everything up front. He smiled as if to thank us for our honesty and told us, don’t worry, I’ll swipe them all in the end and if it doesn’t go through, we’ll worry about it then. Well after he began swiping the coupons in the end, the CSM came up and was drilling him (trying to quietly) but we heard her and she asked him why he didn’t go thru them one by one and he said, I saw what I rang up and now I’m swiping the coupons and she looked at me and I looked at her (like …stay and help if you want to) and she told him that she would discuss it with him before he left for the night! OMgoodness! Are you kidding me… He told her ok, shrugged his shoulders and kept on swiping! LOL The customers behind me looked at her in disbelief as she walked off. I felt so bad for him. The only coupon that didn’t work was one for the Renuzit… It said we couldn’t use it for the cones. Even though it had the same name on it. We told him not to worry about it… We spent over a $108.00 in there, but we were buying for 3 weeks and we have a family of 5… so that was excellent considering that we got personal items, household items and groceries all in that trip… We saved close to 25.00 by using coupons. And he was sure to tell us and was happy for us and the people behind us were happy too and wanted to know where to get them… But that CSM was t’d off… We shop there atleast 2 to 3 times a week… And they are tripping about$ 25.00 in savings… Come on… give me a break! But at the same time… when I sit back and think about it… Desperate times call for desperate measures, so they have to be sure everyone is being honest… But it would make sense for them to post a sign informing the customers that due to fraud they want to be sure that the coupons are valid… Anyway, our clerk told us that if the coupon was not good, it would not accept it… He was so nice and I’m glad that he didn’t let that CSM intimidate him one bit…

Hi,
I kind of had a similar situation, but I just thought it was the cashier being new or something. She read each and every coupon I had, but she did not go through each item. I thought it was strange, but after reading about your incident I think I understand. It must be something new. The only thing they have told me in the past is that you cannot have more than one coupon that is the same in one transaction. I don’t really follow that because they usually don’t follow that policy.
I can’t wait until Sunday to see what happens. I will report back! 🙂

What a horrible experience! I haven’t been to Walmart in a long time as it is in a very inconvenient location. I was at KMart a few months ago with many coupons purchased online, stocking up, & I have noticed that some say “limit to 4 coupons”, but I had some that did NOT say that on it. However the registers must be set up to only accept 4 coupons for 4 like items because anything I went over on beeped the register, even if the coupon did not say limit 4. The seemingly nice cashier became not so friendly & said she couldn’t take them after scanning a few times. I even said that it didn’t say limit 4, she wasn’t going to bother. So I just accepted that. A few weeks later I was in the same position and the guy cashier went to the service desk when that happened, came back & made the c oupons work. Sometimes I think it just depends on whether the cashier gives a hoot to help the customer.

I had a similar situation at Walmart the other day. I bought about 10 items for which I had a coupon for each. I typically look for a young cashier but, this day, only grandmas were available. The women read every coupon putting her eye glasses on each time, pulled several items out of the bags that were already packed, scanned the coupons and when they went through, she said “I didn’t think that one would work”. Then, she questioned another coupon which I had to read to here aloud. Her response was, “oops”. I headed there again today only this time, my husband will be with me. Whenever he is, nothing seems to go wrong.

I’m actually surprised that this is your first time having a bad experience there. I always have problems at Wal-Mart, which I why I rarely bother to go there. Two out of the last three times they did exactly what they did to you, pulling out items and double-checking the coupons. Plus the coupons all seem to beep and have to be pushed through by the cashier, which this time they couldn’t seem to do, or just didn’t want to bother making it work and I was over it so I just wanted to leave by then. I went in for a some cheap deals and overage items and it was my 3rd bad experience out of the last 3 times I went there. I actually wrote about my Wal-Mart problems this week too: http://cillasdeals.wordpress.com/2011/09/02/massive-grocery-week-over-245-worth-for-just-89-08/

Today, I Had problems @ Wal-mart too, I had coupons for 4 trial Cascade detergent and the clerk was gonna honor 1.After giving me the riot act of how I could use only 1 and me feeling so small. She called the manager over who I use to work with many years ago and the manager honored all 4. This was in cental PA. I can’t stand the fact that people look @ u different when u love to coupon thanks to the ridiculous TLC show Exteme Couponing for this! I’m a couponer by heart and save so much $ for my family and I’m determine to never give up! I wish everyone else well @ their local Walmart!

I also had the same problem with a cashier in a lehighton, Pa Walmart. I had some price matches and coupons, the cashier that took care of me questioned and scrutinize every item to the point that the line backed up and the customer behind me became belligerent. The customer was cursing at me and shoving my groceries forward, I looked at the cashier and she did’nt do a thing. She should have started flashing her light and alerted her CSM. My husband and I are not aggressive people so we just hurried up and got out of there. If it had been someone else the situation could have gotten out of hand. The following weeks we went shopping at ShopRite because I did’nt feel comfortable shopping at walmart, I was afraid if I tried price matching again I would have a simlar exprience. But I did return last week and save a total of $32.00 in coupons & freebies not counting the price matches and the cashier that I had was great. I told her what had happen to me before and my hands were shaking as I pointed the items in my ads, she told me not to worry and she turned off her light so that no one would get in line behind us. I wrote an email to walmart telling them about my experience so hopefully they address this issue.

I also had an issue at our WalMart In Alva, OK. Was told by the cashier that the store manager has been letting them know that a new policy is in the talks to not allow customers to use Match Ads in conjunction with coupons. I said “really” I thought it was Walmarts policy to beat anyone’s price and as for the coupons, doesn’t the store get the amount of the coupon plus 8 cents for every one? I looked up corporate policy, “which I thought all walmarts had to follow” and there is nothing different about match ads and coupons.

Ah my favorite was using formula checks…I had like 15 coupons for $5 off and they were on sale for $5.47….the cashier said each one had to be rung individually…my bank called me 20 minutes later asking why I had 15 transactions for 50 cents…thankfully the older gentleman behind me no worries and flashed HIS coupon binder…I too wish cashiers understood the difference between ‘1/purchase’ and ‘1/transaction’…

I am so sorry that happened to you! the same thing happened to me today at Target. i have heard that the younger guys are the best ones to go for when checking out and as soon as he saw me pull up in my cart he gave me a dirty look and didnt say one word to me – he did the same thing and searched my bags for the items and was really cross with me and read every coupon carefully. he didnt tell me to have a good day or anything. i was about ready to cry. i have only been couponing a month and looove it.. but not that part of it! we’re not criminals!!

This nearly always happens to me at Walmart, I try to just go to Target with my coupons because the Walmarts are absolutely horrible near me.

I wonder if she’s a new couponer herself and just doing some on the job research with your good deals as her subject?

I had the same thing happen to me. Only the cashier wouldn’t take the renuzit coupon on the renuzit cone because she said it wasn’t for the spray as the picture showed. I said ok and asked her to take it out of my bag and credit my purchase.

This is one of the reasons that I rarely do any coupon shopping at Walmart. In my store they are always so slow they pull every single item out of the bag and check it. I hate being one to hold up the line and it makes me so mad they do this because I would never misuse coupons. So now I just shop there a lot less often.
