We quickly stopped by Walmart to grab a few items yesterday. It really was supposed to be a quick trip as we intended to be in and out in about 20 minutes. The actual shopping was quite swift…however, I had the weirdest checkout I have ever had and a literal first-time experience that REALLY SLOWED my “quick trip” down!
But before I have my little checkout rant…. here are the results of the shopping trip!
- 1 bag of tortilla chips sale for $1.78 = final is $1.78
- 2.5 lbs of bananas for .52 each lb = final is $1.30
- 18 eggs sale for sale for $2.83 = final is $2.83
- 2 Hershey’s chocolate for .74 each = $1.48. Then used BOGO FREE coupon from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -.74 = final is .74 for two or .37 each
- 2 Bags of Earthbound Farms organic carrots sale for .98 each = $1.96. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is FREE with .04 OVERAGE
- 1 Revlon tweezers sale for $2.24. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -1 = final is $1.24
- 1 Tyson Chicken Tenders sale for $4.98. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/21 Smart Source Insert – $1 = final is $3.98
- 1 Gain fabric softener sheets sale for $1.87. Then used .50/1 8/14 Red Plum Insert -.50 = final is $1.37
- 2 Athenos Feta cheese sale for $2.98 each = $5.96. Then used BOGO printable coupon – $2.98 = final is $2.98 for two or $1.49 each
- 3 Renuzit Neutralizer cones sale for .94 each = $2.82. Then used three $1.00/1 printable coupons – $3 = final is FREE with .18 OVERAGE
- 4 Cascade trial size sale for .97 each = $3.88. Then used four $1.00/1 8/28 PG Insert – $4 = final is FREE with .12 OVERAGE
- 1 Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread sale for $1.98. Then used .55/1 from the 8/14 Red Plum Insert – .55 = final is $1.43
- 2 Alexia Red Potatoes family size (with garlic and parmesan… yum!) sale for $2.78 each = $5.56. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is $3.56 for two or $1.78 each
Summary: The total before coupons was $38.64. We then used $17.77 in coupons, which made our final total $20.87. This is a savings of 46% off Walmart everyday low prices just with using coupons!
So here is what happened – I really didn’t have that many items and scanning was very quick (I was also in a semi-hurry, which is why there wasn’t that many things). I then handed the cashier my coupons…….
She literally read all the details of each coupon and then fished through the bags for each item. She then pulled it out, checked it and THEN scanned it (each coupon went through with NO problems as I was not using the coupons in any unwarranted way). It took me over 15 minutes to checkout! I have NEVER experienced anything like this. In all of our years of couponing, they always just scan the coupon and if there is a question, then they ask/research. I am not sure if this is something new per Walmart’s policy or backlash from the TLC Extreme Couponing show.
I wanted to ask the lady if she did not trust me because I felt like a criminal for using coupons in those 15 minutes, because they way she was researching each item/coupon made me feel like I was trying to pull a fast one on her. Even on the coupons where they was an overage, I thought she was going to give me gruff, but after she read the coupon, found the items, re-read the coupon – her response was Hmm (because it was a valid coupon/item pair)… then scanned the coupon and went through. I was thinking the first few coupons she did this with “surely since none of them have given her problems, she isn’t going to do this for EVERY coupon!” But she kept on doing the same thing. The line started short, but by the time she was done, it was a very long line with very frustrated patrons.
I did not say anything. I wanted to be careful to not take this out on her because perhaps this was a new Walmart policy. I just stood there while she read, searched for the item, compared each item to each coupon and THEN scanned (again with no coupon having issues!). I was also feeling embarrassed to all of those standing in line. It really was not a pleasant experience. I should have asked why she was doing what she was doing, but honestly, I just wanted it to be over as quickly as possible!
All of this to state that next time you shop at Walmart, be sure to have the Walmart coupon policy printed out and with you, because I did not have it at that time and I was worried I was going to need it. Although it was super long, I felt like a criminal until it was over. In the end, she couldn’t fault me for anything. I paid and walked out with my head low……
I would consider myself a seasoned couponer. But that experience, if I was a newbie, it probably would have turned me off to couponing. We are curious if anyone else is experiencing these types of checkouts at Walmart?

Wow.. I only use my coupons at Walmart because they are just the opposite of that. I am shocked.. I am going tomorrow and will let you know. I have various free coupons that I am using. My local grocery store is where I usually have my coupon problems, not Walmart. So sorry to hear.

I HATE shopping at Walmart with coupons. A few weeks ago when I shopped there, I was checking out, he scanned everything, then I handed him my coupons. He took them, looked at me and said in the rudest voice “just so you know, if these don’t scan, don’t think I’m going to push them through for you.” Umm ok, wasn’t planning on you doing that especially since I used all of them correctly. (which by the way, not one of them beeped). I was so mad after that that I vowed not to go there again, but I caved and went again last week just to get the cascade trail packs and some milk. The cashier grabbed the cascade and said “if you have coupons for these, you can’t use them on the trial size.” I told her that it does not indicate that on it and she told me it does so I handed it to her and asked her so show me where. After looking over and over it she finally said, “well you can’t use them.” I told her, how about you just go ahead and try scanning it, and if it beeps then I won’t use it, she agreed and wouldn’t you know it, it went through just fine. Now I am really sticking to my guns and NEVER going back there again! (sorry that I just ranted too, but it still just makes me so mad to think about)!

I never shop at Walmart because I dislike their business policies. I know that in our area most of the clerks are high school dropouts and not very interested in customer service. Never is a long time, but that is when I plan to start shopping at Walmart.
Chris
Cathey King- This is just for you. I am pissed at your comment. I am a high school drop out. Not proud of it, but at the time I was young and stupid and THOUGHT that I had better things to do at the time. I regret the decision that I made back then but I am not stupid, I do not lack customer service and walmart doesn’t hire high school drop outs. I am a successful mother of two, thank you very much!
Jan
High school drop outs? Really? I worked at Walmart for three years and I’ll have you know I graduated college. As have many others who work there. If you haven’t noticed jobs are hard to come by and some have to work! I know many Walmart employees who always give 110% and strive to give the best customer service as possible. Most of which are young and in high school. You shouldn’t judge people so quickly!

I often feel embarassed when clerks react like this. My boyfriend does not like to stand in line with me anymore. I frequently find myself apologizing to people behind me and am relieved when no one gets in line after me when I am using complicated coupons. It can be very annoying, especially if you have to explain to the clerk why they should honor your coupon. I still have not tried the Walmart price matching policy for these reasons.
Nonetheless, it still does not stop me from using my coupons. What can you do? I never get in the express line anymore even if I have just a few items if I am using coupons. It’s worth the annoyance.
Cathey King
I don’t feel bad telling the folks who line up behind me that it may take awhile. I have also been known to offer them coupons and remind them to ask for their Senior Discount!
emjay
senior discount? I missed that in the policy…..
thanks
Joy
My bf refuses to come shopping with me anymore.
However, whenever he has to buy something, the first question is, “well, don’t you have a coupon for that?”
I never use coupons at Walmart in less I know there won’t be a problem. Many of the cashiers I have encountered there seem to feel they do not need to scan them. I only go in for items which they are the cheapest on and coupons are not offered for these items (i.e. flavored waters).

I most certainly have had the same experience lately at my walmart as well. I near Leesville, LA. I knew I was in for a worriesome checkout when the cashier pulled out her reading glasses and started scrutinizing every single coupon I had! Even my mfg cpns. She interrogated me about where I got each cpn, why did I have so many of the same kind of cpn and informed me that multiple copies of internet cpns were a sign of fraud. I told her it was only a sign of fraud if the numbers were the same. She didn’t understand the difference in “one per transaction” and “one per purchase” (niether did the csm OR the manager I talked to!) and there were instances when she told me that “it was too good of a deal so the cpn MUST not be meant to be used that way”. This was on the advil deal where the cpn said ANY and I was trying to get the pocket packs, the cascade cpns & the tide cpns that said ANY and had no size restrictions and the olay cpn where you had to buy the body wash, bars or lotion (again, no size restrictions) and you got the shave gel for free. She first tried to tell me I couldn’t do it because (for whatever reason!) she insisted it was going to give me overage, (even on the ones where it wasn’t going to give me overage!) Once I showed her and the CSM in the cpn policy that overage is allowed, she then told me I couldn’t use them because “it was too good of a deal so they must not be meant to be used this way” Needless to say, I was STUNNED at this treatment. It made me feel like I was trying to scam the store and it was embarrassing because of course the line was building up behind me and ppl were standing there seeing me be treated this way. The big kicker was I was not only treated this was once, but TWICE. I work nights and would go after work around midnight, so there is only 2 checkers that time of night and I happened to get this same horrible woman and the SAME CSM both times. I complained the first time online to the Leesville store, that is when I got the mgr who also agreed w/them about the one per purchase, one per trans deal and the second time, I went straight to HQ which did ABSOLUTELY no good, because they just referred it back to the leesville mgt!
I know the stores have to be careful because of the fraud going on, but this is really getting horrible. I am afraid it’s only going to get worse though, especially
If it is because of the Extreme Couponing show! I saw the clip from the next season and that woman they show is HORRID! If you haven’t seen it, check it out here

RuthAnn, I shop in the Pineville, LA, store and they do the exact same thing! It’s terrible. They were not so bad before the TLC show came out, but they are terrible now. I went in at midnight one night and the only cashier was a lady that has given me trouble in the past. The fact that I was getting an overage just blew her mind, she told me they did not except IPs, and she made me dig out every item in my cart and show it to her. They all make me feel like I am stealing something from the store. Why should I feel like that? I find that most of the cashiers do not know their store coupon policy either. I have avoided price matching for the most part because I think it’s only going to be a hassle. I generally shop Kroger for the sales, and then shop Walmart for whatever I need that is not on sale or that I don’t have a coupon for. Walmart seems to have the lowest every day price around here, but I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble.

Same EXACT thing happened to me this week, only my cashier called her mgr. over before she even started scanning Q’s, she told the mgr. “same crap different day”, I was mortified and will never go through her line again!
Joy
I always call the next day after a horrible transaction and demand to speak to a manager. I don’t know if it does anything, but at least I’m speaking with someone else, other than the cashier/manager on duty at that time.

I hate using coupoons at Wal-Mart. I have so few options for shopping in Cedar City but I would rather pay more then to get hassled or have each coupon thorougly read and hold up the line. Our Walgreens is the opposite, they offer couponing classes and their employees even help if you get a little flustered when checking out.

I HATE WalMart…PERIOD. I never shop there. However, I went in the other day to get the baby Heinz ketchups over in the deli for 10c each using my 50c of ANY Heinz, no restrictions. Anywho, I only got 7 of them and picked up a couple of other cheapy items. My cashier ALSO examined each of my coupons which also made me feel a bit criminal! She first refused to take them because on the coupon in fine print it says “only one coupon per item” and I had 7 items. After I confidently told her that was meaning only use one coupon for one ketchup instead of multiple coupons for one ketchup and also showed her a coupon in my purse that said “limit 4 like coupons in one transaction” and that was a limit coupon, she finally let me have the ketchup. Geeze. I know there are scammers out there, but I’m not one of them and I don’t appreciate being treated that way. All stores need to teach their cashiers about couponing!!!!
RuthAnn Alston
I also tried to show them the other cpns I had that showed one per purchase 4 per transaction and you know what this manager told me? Well, they are just contradicting themselves is all. I said, why would they word it like that just to contradict ppl? GEESH! I begged them to contact the redemption center and to clarify these things and THEN make a decision. I told them they are the only place that does it like that (All I have here is walmart, walgreens and market basket!) and that it is not correct the way they are interpreting it.
Like I said, complaining to HQ does NO good because they just kick the complaint back to the local store. There has GOT to be something we can do to get them to deal with these issues.

I usually do all my food shopping at Walmart because I don’t own a car and I rely upon friends to take me shopping and I don’t feel that it would be right for me to ask them to go to 5 different stores.
Anyway, when I do shop I ALWAYS let the cashier know ahead of time that I have coupons, I give them to her in advance as I am loading the belt up with my items. I also ALWAYS put my items that I have coupons for at the end, with some space in between my other products, and I let her know which ones they are. By doing it this way it goes quickly and if there is something she needs to check out or a price she needs to put on the coupon itself it’s right there at the end of the register tape and easy to find. I have NEVER had a problem using coupons in my Walmart and the cashiers have all been good. I guess I am one of the fortunate ones 🙂

If it makes you feel any better I went through the same thing on Sunday at a grocery store. I was in the express lane and I felt so bad for the people behine me. I had duplicate items and it seemed she couldn’t remember the few items she just scanned. She searched through my bags, kept counting everything on the register (even though she just counted it all in the bags), looked at the coupon. It was ridiculous but I just stood there silent too. I’d hate to see what would have happened if I had a big order. But she never asked any questions of me just needed to be sure for herself before scanning the coupon. I guess it’s just one more thing we have to live with in order to save money.

I’ve not had trouble at Walmart, but I had a horrible experience at Walgreen’s this week. Even worse than yours. I had bought some formula at Walgreen’s on Clearance. I didn’t have my formula checks with me so the cashier had told me to buy them and then bring them back with the formula checks and they’d re-ring them using the checks. Well, when I came back the clerk made a huge deal out of the transaction, called the manager, the manager kept me waiting for more than 20 minutes while he called the store manager to see if he could do the re-ring or not. They got two employees involved too and all of them were trying to read the fine print on my checks and the other coupons in my tranasaction and kept changing their minds and their rules trying to make the transaction not work in my favor. After an HOUR and the manager having re-rung my entire transaction literally 8 times!!! I finally walked out of the store with nothing. They totally made me feel like a criminal and like I was trying to do something underhanded! GRRR…. totally know how you feel 🙁

It surely is embarassing when they deny valid coupons. What my husband did was cancelled the items and told her they are “false advertising”! Asked her to call a manager and just let the manager know that they are false advertising. He’s pretended to be cool about it and made sure people in line hear him talking to the manager saying they are FALSE ADVERTISING and that it is against the LAW. Now they are the criminal! They will do everything to get you out of there. I have no problems with price match ups though, make sure you give the ads ahead as they have to overwrite their price as they scan the item. Did someone dare to do the new advertisement? It’s showing that you can declare item at lower price in other stores and you dont even need an ad to show, and they will just match it up?

I had the same experience as well. I was at walmart 3 times last week but had only 1-2 items each time. The cashier checked each coupon and scanned them and checked them again. He explained that they are required to do this since there are lot of fake coupons floating around.. since each time I had 1/2 coupons I was able to finish my transactions fairly quickly. The next time we went in it was the same.

By the way, the manager did made the cashier honor the coupon (by price match up – it was a store coupon of some sort). So we took the items back and went home laughing about it instead of being mad. Boy, you should see their faces when he said they are False advertising, funny! Next time they get you embarrassed make a quick twist! They shouldn’t treat people like a criminal if they are using coupons. Go give them a lesson! I would be happy to know if it worked for you..

I had a terrible experience at Wal-Mart recently with the Cascade coupons. The customer service manager told me the coupons had to match the picture regardless of what the wording on the coupon was. I only shop there when they have something that I can’t get somewhere else (small town) but that did it. She was very rude and the cashier called her before she ever tried to scan my coupon. I just left. I told them I would shop somewhere else. I will not go back in there.

I stopped shopping at Walmart a year ago because of a similar problem. The cashier actually refused to let me use more than one coupon even though we were buying six of the same item.

I never used to have problems at my Walmart, but a couple of weeks ago I was informed that I was only allowed to use one like coupon. I was shopping for my job and had picked up 2 packages of self laminating sheets that had coupons attached to them. Even though the items came with coupons attached, she wouldn’t let me use them!

I went to Walmart the other night for my first couponing trip there. The nearest Walmart to me is about 30 minutes away so I had a large shopping list and fistful of coupons in tow. I couldn’t find half of what I wanted, which was frustrating enough, but then when I went to check out, the woman cashier was very rude and didn’t want to accept any of my internet coupons or coupons for items with overage or ones that didn’t match the picture exactly. She called over her co-worker friend to verify and she had the same negative attitude telling me that I couldn’t use any of them and was treating me like I was being dishonest. I had already whipped out my Walmart coupon policy and they didn’t want to read it. After explaining to them several times over, I asked for a manager. She came over and set them straight, thankfully (although even she gave me trouble on the Cascade ones before realizing her mistake) and I was able to use every last one but it definitely turned me off to using coupons there in the future. I’m sure every shopping experience is different but with it being so far away, I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle and all the unknowns.

I have had same issue at walmart.. Its a crap shoot everytime we go. I try to look for our usual girl now, but of course she can’t always be there. What gets me is when you have a coupon.. they SEE the product… they check the coupon.. it wont scan and they hand it back to you!!! That frustrates me til no end. You see there is no issues but oh well?? grrr

The crazy part about this is that Walmart has been the best and easiest for our couponing – we have never had issues before. It is the Walgreens in our area that is horrible! We dread Walgreens shopping because of how difficult they make it on us.
As far as the picture issue (only honoring the item shown on the coupon), we have had that before too, but they have usually honored it based on the wording after kindly explaining how ridiculous it would be to include every item’s image the coupon is good for on a tiny thumbprint picture.
I have a funny example of the picture issue in regards to a time that we price matched at Target. I was price matching Luvs diapers from the Kmart ad for $15.99 for the Big Pack. But Kmart also had a picture of the 384 ct. wipes on sale for like $9.99. The guy at Target said that it was the 384 ct diapers (the ad had a picture of the wipes, and then just said “384 ct. for $9.99.” He was refusing to price match my $15.99 BP diapers (around 100 ct.) because of the picture…. I kindly asked “well then, could you please go in the back and get me the 384 ct. diapers for $9.99 – I would LOVE to buy them!!” He stopped, thought about it and then laughed and realized that I was right and price-matched!

That’s way I never use coupons at any stores any more, seems like every cashier I ever get is so rude. I also really hate the show TLC Extreme Couponing because it makes it that much harder now for people like me that just want to use a few coupons and buy a “normal” amount of items and save some money, I’m not looking to have a huge stockpile.

I haven’t had too many problems except getting home and realizing they didn’t scan one of my coupons and this has happened at almost every place I’ve shopped. It’s really irritating when you have coupons for $$$ off your transaction and they miss it. I tend to remember the $ amount I took with me and then realize they shorted me $1.50. How do you keep track when they are checking out?
thriftycas
We watch it like a hawk as coupons will stick together or they will miss one, I also hand them to the cashier in groups of 3-5 instead a huge a pile so they can manage it better and so I can see that those 3-5 coupons come off before handing the next set.
Joy
I will take my mom with me for large transactions. I pack while she watches the cashier like a hawk.

I have had that happen to me a few times too cindy,So I started to count my coupons when I get to the checkout, and watch as they scan and if it doesn’t scan I make sure they redo it, then after they hand me my recipt I push my cart to the front of the store and count the coupons scanned again just to be sure, I’ve gotten home one too many times just to realise a coupon was misssed or scanned wrong for some reason. NEVER again! and also I cashier profile too,I know which ones to go to and wich ones to avoid, even if the line is short and I’m in a hurry because in the long run I’d probably endup in the line just as long anyway lol.

I had that recently happen with coupons that were on the products that Walmart sold, in this case on a air filter for the air conditioner. It was a 2.00 off coupon per product. It ate the coupon fine the first time, but we had bought three filters and the two others it would not accept. She read the whole fine print, went through our shopping bags, looked at the filters, read the fine print again, looked at the filters again, and finally entered it manually. I was a bit miffed, because I always make sure to use coupons only the way they are suggested, e.g. not on other sizes. But I guess people will try to scam and therefore they are extra careful.
Maybe it would help to put the coupons on the corresponding product, in your case? Sometimes I sprint in a shop and don’t use the coupons I have because I know I have to be somewhere, and won’t get out there fast enough if I use a coupon. It’s a shame, but it happens often, not only with Walmart.

This just makes me furious!!! *These* cashiers act like you are taking money out of *their * pockets….are they just jealous they aren’t smart enough to figure out how to save money?!
Joy
I think that’s really what it is. In a lot of cases, they will tell me they cannot accept a coupon without scanning it, and then not give it back to me! When I ask for the coupon back, to use at another store, one told me they needed to keep it so I wouldn’t try to “scam” another store.
Oh boy, I asked for a manager real quick. He put it in, and there wasn’t a problem after that.
I really think it is because they are not willing to sit and cut coupons and then compare deals.
