We quickly stopped by Walmart to grab a few items yesterday. It really was supposed to be a quick trip as we intended to be in and out in about 20 minutes. The actual shopping was quite swift…however, I had the weirdest checkout I have ever had and a literal first-time experience that REALLY SLOWED my “quick trip” down!
But before I have my little checkout rant…. here are the results of the shopping trip!
- 1 bag of tortilla chips sale for $1.78 = final is $1.78
- 2.5 lbs of bananas for .52 each lb = final is $1.30
- 18 eggs sale for sale for $2.83 = final is $2.83
- 2 Hershey’s chocolate for .74 each = $1.48. Then used BOGO FREE coupon from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -.74 = final is .74 for two or .37 each
- 2 Bags of Earthbound Farms organic carrots sale for .98 each = $1.96. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is FREE with .04 OVERAGE
- 1 Revlon tweezers sale for $2.24. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/28 Smart Source insert -1 = final is $1.24
- 1 Tyson Chicken Tenders sale for $4.98. Then used $1.00/1 from the 8/21 Smart Source Insert – $1 = final is $3.98
- 1 Gain fabric softener sheets sale for $1.87. Then used .50/1 8/14 Red Plum Insert -.50 = final is $1.37
- 2 Athenos Feta cheese sale for $2.98 each = $5.96. Then used BOGO printable coupon – $2.98 = final is $2.98 for two or $1.49 each
- 3 Renuzit Neutralizer cones sale for .94 each = $2.82. Then used three $1.00/1 printable coupons – $3 = final is FREE with .18 OVERAGE
- 4 Cascade trial size sale for .97 each = $3.88. Then used four $1.00/1 8/28 PG Insert – $4 = final is FREE with .12 OVERAGE
- 1 Sara Lee Whole Wheat bread sale for $1.98. Then used .55/1 from the 8/14 Red Plum Insert – .55 = final is $1.43
- 2 Alexia Red Potatoes family size (with garlic and parmesan… yum!) sale for $2.78 each = $5.56. Then used two $1.00/1 printable coupon – $2 = final is $3.56 for two or $1.78 each
Summary: The total before coupons was $38.64. We then used $17.77 in coupons, which made our final total $20.87. This is a savings of 46% off Walmart everyday low prices just with using coupons!
So here is what happened – I really didn’t have that many items and scanning was very quick (I was also in a semi-hurry, which is why there wasn’t that many things). I then handed the cashier my coupons…….
She literally read all the details of each coupon and then fished through the bags for each item. She then pulled it out, checked it and THEN scanned it (each coupon went through with NO problems as I was not using the coupons in any unwarranted way). It took me over 15 minutes to checkout! I have NEVER experienced anything like this. In all of our years of couponing, they always just scan the coupon and if there is a question, then they ask/research. I am not sure if this is something new per Walmart’s policy or backlash from the TLC Extreme Couponing show.
I wanted to ask the lady if she did not trust me because I felt like a criminal for using coupons in those 15 minutes, because they way she was researching each item/coupon made me feel like I was trying to pull a fast one on her. Even on the coupons where they was an overage, I thought she was going to give me gruff, but after she read the coupon, found the items, re-read the coupon – her response was Hmm (because it was a valid coupon/item pair)… then scanned the coupon and went through. I was thinking the first few coupons she did this with “surely since none of them have given her problems, she isn’t going to do this for EVERY coupon!” But she kept on doing the same thing. The line started short, but by the time she was done, it was a very long line with very frustrated patrons.
I did not say anything. I wanted to be careful to not take this out on her because perhaps this was a new Walmart policy. I just stood there while she read, searched for the item, compared each item to each coupon and THEN scanned (again with no coupon having issues!). I was also feeling embarrassed to all of those standing in line. It really was not a pleasant experience. I should have asked why she was doing what she was doing, but honestly, I just wanted it to be over as quickly as possible!
All of this to state that next time you shop at Walmart, be sure to have the Walmart coupon policy printed out and with you, because I did not have it at that time and I was worried I was going to need it. Although it was super long, I felt like a criminal until it was over. In the end, she couldn’t fault me for anything. I paid and walked out with my head low……
I would consider myself a seasoned couponer. But that experience, if I was a newbie, it probably would have turned me off to couponing. We are curious if anyone else is experiencing these types of checkouts at Walmart?

Ok I to loath walmart! I actually went 1 1/2 yrs of not stepping foot in there due to their customer service & sales practices!
Similar issues were had with price matching & coupons at their stores! I could not believe how they made me feel, too like a criminal. This being on west coast and over a yr ago I would say it’s safer to print out all their policy’s to take with you always while shopping there. If all else fails start dialing their corporate number to complain while in line! I did this once too. I told them the persons name, store location, offered to hand phone over to them while they were still scrutinizing my shopping. That shut them up fast, suddenly my long check out got sped up fast.
Dont be scared to stand up and put them in their place. They are there to serve us. They need us, or their stores will not make money. We are the customers/ consumers we have rights and deserve respect!
Please take their name or cashier number on receipt go over to CS stand and complain. Call their 1-800-Walmart (1-800-925-6278) even days after the event to let them know you will not stand for such treatment. They once gave me a free gift card to for letting them know how bad a store was. Once they looked into it they saw I was right and it was unfair. Dont forget to, http://www.bbb.org/ or http://www.consumeraffairs.com/ to file complaints. BBB will investigate if you call to file in some cases.
Best of luck to you all on your next wal-mart shopping trip.

I RECENTLY WAS IN WALMART AND HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE. I GAVE HER MY COUPONS UP FRONT SO AS SHE RANG SHE LOOKED AT MATCHING COUPON TO VERIFY. I CHATTED HER UP AND FOUND OUT SHE WAS NEW AND THAT SHE WAS LEARNING HOW TO MATCH THE COUPON WITH THE ITEM. MAYBE THEY DO HAVE NEW POLICY, THAT SHE DIDN’T SAY. SHE WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND WE HAD NO PROBLEMS, JUST TOOK AN EXTRA FEW MINUTES.

I have also been through this at Walmart and at KMart in Virginia. At Kmart the girl at the register also called over her Manager and they both checked and read all the coupons and matched them to the coupons. They were both acting like I was trying to do something wrong. They acted like they were disappointed that the coupons went through without a problem.

I’ve had this happen to me at KMart. Thanks, TLC. Just like Trading Spaces turned my husband against home decorating, Extreme Couponing has turned the stores against us!

I don’t think extreme couponing has much to do with what is happening at walmart. Its that if they take a coupon without checking it and something is wrong, they are wrote up for it, 3 write ups your let go! yes some of the cashiers are a little snotty or just don’t understand the wording on the coupons case in point I had a High School student and an older gentleman tell me that i could not use my toilet paper coupons because it stated one coupon for 4 rolls or more, I had 5, 4 roll packages, i had 5 coupons and they said I could only use one coupon because I had more than 4 rolls!! It took a CS to explain to them toilet paper came in rolls!!! and she was younger than me!! Some of the cashiers are more cautious than others.

I went to Walmart today to buy a few things. I mainly went to get the Cascade Trial Size packets. I was able to buy all 10 I had coupons for in one transaction. However they would not price match at the prices I hear everyone else is getting from the Walgreens ads. Example: Suave Mens 3 in 1 on sale for 2/$6 -$2 RR=2/$4. From what I hear from others on blogs people are getting the 2/$4 price and then use their coupons. But they would only give me the 2/$6 she even had a CSM come over and he said yes, just the 2/$6. ridiculous. I would think they would prefer our business over sending us to a competitor.
Kirstin
They did that correctly…Wal-Mart will not price match the “after register rewards” price.

I recently had an experience like yours. I left without saying anything and then called to store and asked to speak to a manager. I left feeling like a criminal and I told the manager this. Yes, if they are written up they will be fired after three but having been a former Wal-Mart employee/CSM, this is not acceptable behavior. I understand that the cashier needs to make sure the customer is buying the correct products because if the store is audited and they can not show the same amount of product purchased as the amount of coupons they have redeemed, they will loose the ability to accept coupons as well as not get reimbursed for the coupons redeemed. After explaining my issue with the cashier, the manager apologized and I was given a $20 dollar gift card. If you are treated like this you need to let management know because if you dont tell them no one will and this will continue.

I have had more scrutiny of the coupons also, most recently, i wasn’t allowed overage that everyone reports they get… i price matched scotch tape at 50 cents and had the 1.00 qs, the computer beeped – as it seems to for every thing, i noticed they always have to push some button to make the coupons go through, very annoying, so i just said use three to cover all 6 and she was okay with that… but really in essence that it technicially giving overage on three of them and no coupon on three, i don’t think it was a system issue, she just didn’t want to do it… another time a cashier had to call a member of management over to see if she could ring me up in two transactions because i had those pg coupons that are limit 4 and i wanted to use 8 of them, i am the one that pointed out to her why i was doing it, it took at least 20 minutes for it to be resolved and someone to say okay, was totally ridiculous..

I was in walmart about a week ago trying to use my BOGO coupon on the feta cheese and was told that it was walmart policy not to accept BOGO coupons anymore. Well I did not have the coupon policy so, I could not argue with the lady. Then the cashier pick out the coupons she wanted to use.

I would’ve asked for a manager!!! Picking & choosing?!! That sounds like flat-out poor attitude, not store policies.

I just had a similar experience at Rite Aid yesterday. The store manager happened to be the one checking me out and he slowly read each coupon, went through each bag to check the items and then had to manually input each LONG coupon number—not sure why he didn’t just scan it, but I was too embarassed to ask. It was taking so long (and I only had about 6 coupons) that he had another employee close my line and open up another check-out. I had my 11-yr old daughter with me and she was SO embarassed calling me the crazy coupon lady. I’m a newbie and although it was hard to walk out with my head high, I saved $5 in coupons alone. I sent my husband to Winco yesterday, too, with a ton of coupons and he saved over $20. It all adds up!

Thrifty couple,
Maybe you could copy all of these responses and send them to Walmart Corporate. They need to see this!

My problems aren’t with Walmart alone, sure they have there faults and all the cashiers do things differently than the next. My problem is the older women that are standing behind you when you are armed with your price matched items and your coupons. I got ran over by a cart from a lady who was so feed up with me, and it really wasn’t my fault. I had everything together, sorted just right handing them to her as fast as I could because the lady behind me was huffing and puffing about the wait. Gezz, you are in Walmart it’s not going to be fast. I apologized to the cashier but she was not scanning the coupons very fast at all. Then when they were scanned she just dropped then all over and then had to pick the coupons up and gather them together. All the while telling me how much I was saving. She was great. Well the lady behind me didn’t want to wait she throw her stuff back in her cart and pushed past me and basically ran over my hill trying to go through the checkout line. I was glad I was wearing tennis shoes cause if I had flip flops on I would have been upset. I have also had older women and men for that matter put all there items on the belt just to throw their items back into their cart cause I had so many coupons. I wish Walmart would have a coupons line only. I would be more than happy to be behind someone else that is saving both with coupons and matched prices. It is really sad when people act like that. Trulu a sad day when an older person acts like a child.

Ever since Extreme Couponing came out, I have had that problem EVERYWHERE! This one lady yelled at me at CVS (in front of a long line of people). At Walgreens the Manager has her cashiers doing this for EVERY coupon, and a 2nd person has to inspect and initial all internet coupons printed in black/white (in case they’re photocopies – which is dumb because there are color copy machines too!). I’ve gotten inspected the way you did almost every single time at HEB and Central Market (local grocery stores). It’s ridiculous the way I’m treated lately. I’d stop doing it just to save me the hassle, but we *really* can’t afford to that. I’m just trying to save money for my family. I’m not trying to break every rule to get everything for free, but it’s nice when it happens to a few items I’m buying here and there.

My husband and I had the same problem at walmart in Virginia. First, The cashier and supervisor tried to argue the price on their weekly ad (even when the picture and description matched the item we were purchasing). When they finally agreed that the item was in fact the sale item listed in their ad, they then saw that we had a coupon that would make the item free and proceeded to discuss that issue. The cashier complained that if they accepted the coupon, we would be getting the item for free. Thankfully the supervisor told the cashier that if the coupon scanned, they would need to accept it. Unfortunately the cashier made an attempt to rub the scanner with the coupon (rather then scanning the barcode) and then said the coupon was no good. My husband politely asked her to rescan and when she did (correctly scan it), it surprisingly (to her) scanned as a valid coupon. She made the process so much longer than necessary, made me feel embarrassed/uncomfortable, and generated quite a long line of impatient customers. On the positive side: Outside of the good feeling of finally saving a bunch, I was blessed by an encouraging husband and the patient customer immediately behind us who was amazed by/interested in our saving efforts.

I have a problem with a few of your comments. I am a cashier and I am sure that sometimes I do not do things exactly the way the customer wants. But I am always doing my job and if you start yelling at me, just because I am doing my job, then you need a reality check. No one deserves the abuse that some people give cashiers. It’s not my fault that the company I work for makes me do certain things. So yeah, standing there calling the corporate office might make things go faster for you, but think about that cashier who feels like dirt just because you were impatient. Not exactly a “successful” shopping trip, if it includes ruining some persons day.

I sort of had a “walking out with my head down” experience awhile ago but not at Walmart but at Shoprite! When I handed the cashier my coupons she looked at them like she had never seen coupons before and then gave me dirty looks because almost none of them would scan right ans she kept on having to call for an override..which by the way was not my fault i got ALL the right products and sizes..I was upset when I left and considered not couponing but then the following week i went o a DIFFERENT shoprite and had a wonderful experience..no problems just scan the coupons and go..so i definitely thimk it was just that particular cashier who didint have a clue..i have shopped at walmart and have had no problems!

I filed a complaint with Wal-Mart because I had a GREAT shopping trip… to begin with. I went in and purchased a large number of items for a very small price. All of my coupons scanned with no problem and the cashier was amazed at my savings… I was beaming! Apparently, one of the “managers” that was standing nearby didn’t like what she had seen. After I finished checking out, I was approached by this “manager” and the assistant store manager and told that I could only use (1) coupon per item. I told them that’s exactly what I had done. They said it was impossible. I told them I knew the policy and I didn’t do anything wrong. The assistant manager went on to inform me that from now on I was only allowed (1) coupon per transaction! I again told them that I knew the policy and didn’t do anything wrong and I left the store. It was horribly humiliating and I sent a complaint in about it and will continue to keep inquiring as to what’s been done about it.
Amy B.
Did you show them the receipt??? If only using 1 coupon per item, the receipt would prove that on the spot.
Crystal
Everytime I go to Walmart they hold the coupons up to the light like it’s counterfeit money. I had gotten maybe 7-8 items and had coupons that were not expired and that were for the correct brand, size, quantity of what I got. Well I think the Walmart register is trained to beep at EVERY SINGLE COUPON because it beeped at every single coupon. And I was using the 2.00/1 Schick disposable razors on the 1.97 12 pack disposables they have and the cashier held up the razors and said “this coupon is for the disposables only” all the while her thumb was over the word “disposable” on the dang package. I told her to put it back. (come to find out later the coupon didn’t go through bc the idiot didn’t scan the razors on the original order so the register said the coupon didn’t match the purchases!) Then I was going to use the buy 2, get 1 free Mr. Clean products. I got 3 different products and I knew whichever is most inexpensive is the one they put in for free. She said “no; it has to be 3 of the exact same product”. So I made her void those back off there. Then she wouldn’t take the Bic coupon bc it was printed off the internet, so we put the ink pens back. Finally, I was shouting and very angry and I said “just void the entire da*n transaction out and I will go elsewhere”. She looked at me and said “that will require a csm…” and looked mad bc she had to step away. I said “I don’t care; just do it!” I ended up only purchasing about 3 items I DID NOT have coupons for and I told her “I am not paying full price for items I have valid coupons on”. Immediately after that, I started doing 100% of my grocery shopping at Kroger and have never had one problem. I still go into Walmart every now and then for health & beauty items or toys but my days of blowing 100.00 a week in there are long gone. That company is corrupt and doesn’t care about employees at all.
And before the employees get on here jumping down my throat, I was a Walmart cashier for 2 years & I always scanned my customers’ coupons. And I knew all the behind the scenes secrets of Walmart..they don’t care and the Walton family only cares about $$$$. Their motto “save money live better” and “customer comes first” is a load of crap. If people only knew the behind the scenes things that are going on behind locked doors…

I agree Walmart is very much difficult sometimes. Have even left without using perfectly good coupons once. Ibad looks or words from others, And I never feel bad about using coupns try to avoid this store if possible, but in our town Kmart is closing and that leaves only Walmart and Target. However I shop at Walgreens, CVS and Rite aide and I’d like to commend these stores as they have always been friendly and helpful with a smile. If I’m doing more than one transaction and there is a line I will move out and let others go ahead. I hate holding up lines.. I have never had any bad comments from customers or cashiers other than Walmart and I will never be ashamed to use coupons (besides I’m not an extreme couponer but I do try to get the good deals on what I use, not just because its a steal deal). Sorry Walmart, you’re not all that great!!!

Yes! this has happen to me with certain checkers at different grocery and department stores 🙁 Yep the Extreme Coupon show is messing it up for us couponer’s ! Von’s doesn’t give me no problem since they have coupon’s that you can add on your Von’s card on there site very easy and helpful if you don’t have the coupon’s for the item 🙂 Shoot it does take longer to check out now !!

That is an extremely common scenario for me here in San Jose. The check-out people act like they have never seen a coupon before — I even had one who literally did not know how to scan it. Others ponder each coupon and only reluctantly try to scan them. Others seem determined to find something wrong the with coupons and constantly run to the managers to “verify” them. Their attitudes are slow, unfriendly and borderline rude. I put up with it though because often the prices + coupons can’t be beat! I have also learned not to go through the “fast” checkout lane, even if I only have a few items, because the transaction will never be fast with coupons, and people behind me will be grumbling. I have run into a few of these slow check-outs at other stores, but at Wal-Mart I’m practically guaranteed to have an excruciating check-out and leave feeling like I’m pulling a fast one!

Maybe we should try to boycott the extreme coupon show?? Seems to me that this show should be banned and be rid of, since it makes everyone’s shopping trips a hassle in all stores around the country. I just recently started doing the coupon thing and i get so embarrassed by the treatment i am half tempted to just quit. It is funny how I am just trying to save money on food so my family doesn’t have to rely on the government to feed us but then i get hell for it..so its a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation it seems. I really think the show should go NOW and these people doing the show should be held accountable for the stress they have caused the rest of us..and we follow the guidelines and rules of each store!!! I had this problem not only in walmart but in homeland, cvs, walgreens, big lots, buy for less, and any other small grocery store in my area…i really like saving money but it almost isn’t worth the problem it comes with due to the cashiers rudeness and the other customers nasty stares and comments.

i can’t imagine why you felt like a criminal, having done nothing wrong. instead of sitting there for 15 minutes wondering why this lady was treating you like a second-class citizen, had it ever occurred to you to perhaps ASK her what her deal was? maybe start out by saying, “is this some sort of new policy?”
the fact that you felt like you were a thief or a liar or whatever you want to call it could be because perhaps deep down, you feel that that’s what you are when you coupon as much as you do.
either way, get a real job.
