Are you like me and need to learn how to clean pots and pans to look like new from the black stubborn stains?
Please tell me I am not the only one that burns the bottom of my pans to the point that the pan seems ruined! You know the type of burning that once you wash away all of the food, debris and crusty surface, there is still this caked on black mess that a pan scraper can’t even remove. For those people like me, I will be showing you how to clean pots and pans to look like new!
How to Clean Pots and Pans to Look Like New from the Black Stubborn Stains!
Yes, I admit it, I have done this more than once…more than twice… more than three times…you get the picture.
This is a picture of the pan before, but after it has been cleaned, soaked, scrubbed and even a pan scraper.
Well, I was determined to find a way to restore these absurdly burned bottoms. I am happy to report… I have found the magic solution! The cleaning fairy has landed and now I can restore these beautiful pans that I worked so hard to save for (you know, to actually have nice pans to improve my cooking!). I have had these Cuisinart pans for about 4 years. I was saving for a while and then stumbled upon a super deal on Rue La La. They are awesome, but they are not immune to the kitchen burns.
So, if you want to restore your caked on burns on your pans, try this out!
How to Clean Pots and Pans to Look Like New
Ingredients needed to make Magic Pan Cleaning Solution:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup of warm water
- Several drops of classic blue dawn (other dish soaps *may work, but I know that the ingredients in this version do some miraculous cleaning around the house)
- Several drops of lemon essential oil
- Aluminum Foil
Yes, friends – no need for anything expensive and complicated. Things that you may already have in your home. As far as the essential oil, I have been using them in my home for cleaning now for over 8 years! I love essential oils for cleaning because I have been able to replace chemicals in our home and get amazing cleaning benefits. We get our essential oils for two different places. Cleaning grade essential oils HERE and essential oils safe for use around the home, as well as personal use. These more versatile oils are found here. Note that a 15ml bottle has 300 drops, making it only pennies each use! It’s actually cheaper than cleaners because of the high concentration and only a few drops per usage! It’s a frugal solution – as well as natural!
Lemon Essential oil is essential in our home! I use it all of the time for many purposes. I have just kept the lemon essential oil that is safe for home and personal use on hand from now on because I use it for so many things! In fact, here’s just the uses for lemon essential oil just in the kitchen!
How to make Magic Pan Cleaning Solution:
- In a small bowl, add the baking soda, the dish soap and the lemon essential oil in the bowl.
- Then add the 1/2 cup of warm water and mix well (a regular spoon will do!).
- Once it is thoroughly mixed, pour the solution into the pan.
- You want this to soak for a while. At least an hour, but even overnight.
- Basically, when you “tip” the pan, you want to see a layer of paste sticking to the pan and the excess liquid falling to the bottom.
- Once it has soaked for a while, then cut off a good sized strip of aluminum foil and scrunch into a ball.
- Begin, scrubbing the pan. Put a little elbow grease into it, but aluminum foil will really be the only effective tool! You may need to replace the aluminum foil a couple of times because it will become a really tight ball when you use it and put pressure on it. A fresh ball a couple of times will give you the most effective cleaning.
- You will notice your water solution turning black and dirtier the more your scrub! YAY for the burn being removed!
After a few minutes of scrubbing
Icky! But it’s coming off!!
A little more scrubbing and even dirtier solution!
- Keep scrubbing until you feel satisfied! Then rinse and wash as usual.
- These were my results from one session of magic cleaning solution! I can do it a second time for those even deeper, set-in stains. But round #1 had phenomenal results!!
- YAY! My expensive pans are nearly back to normal after one cleaning.
- I also did this on the bottom of the pan as there were burnt stains that any normal washing and scrubbing could not remove.
- Here’s the results of the bottom of the pan too!
So, I hope you don’t burn your pans as often as I do, but if and when you have some stubborn pan stains, and you have to ask the question of how to clean pots and pans to look like new again, you now have the “magic” solution to restore them to their nearly new state! I am so happy that I figured this out because I had tried many other solutions I had found online (like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide and so many other solutions) and none of them really worked. I finally took my experience with making my own homemade cleaning products for the past 8 years and said…”I am going to try THIS solution.”
Finally… success!!

I can hardly wait to try this on some cast aluminum pans that are around 70 years old, maybe more. Do you have a solution for ceramic nonstick fry pans that start sticking> I have tried boiling water in them for long periods, but it didn’t work. They aren’t scratched, but stick in the center. They are only a few months old, but too old to return.
Thanks
Victoria
This looks like a great non-toxic cleaner; however, I’ve got one that requires NO scrubbing! Wet the inside of the blackened pot. Sprinkle Cream of Tartar (found in the spice section of your local grocery store) over the blackened area so that it makes a paste. Spread this paste mixture over the blackened area of the pan and let it sit. As the paste dries, it peels the blackened area up. NO scrubbing necessary. If the pan is really blackened, you may need to repeat this process. The dried Cream of Tartar can be reused on another blackened pan–just store in an air-tight container and make sure you mark it so that you remember what’s in the container.

I love this Victoria! Thank you for sharing this idea and I want to give this a try too next time. I will post about my results when I do! Thank you for that tip. 🙂

We normally collect all our pans and other utensils and get to our small warehouse for cleaning, because we use alkali cleaning products that dye all the clothes and textiles at home if they get on them. We managed to find more here about how to arrange them all later and on what shelves, so that they are kept well. And we also bought a table for cleaning in the warehouse. That helps a lot.

Because we use alkaline cleaning materials, which stain all of our clothes and linens if they get on them, we usually gather all of our pans and other utensils and head to our tiny warehouse for cleaning.

The process is pretty unique, and it results in shinier pots in the kitchen. Play skribbl io.
