Tonight (August 3, 2010) is National Night Out – what that means that is many cities across the Nation are hosting gatherings for the community to sponsored by local businesses and attended by the law enforcement and public service groups to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
What are some of the activities that promote the above goals on National Night Out 2010? Well according to their website:
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods ‘celebrate’ NNO with a variety of events and activities such as:
- block parties,
- cookouts,
- visits from local police and sheriff departments
- parades, exhibits,
- flashlight walks,
- contests, and
- youth programs.
NNO has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond the one night.
It is FREE to attend your local National Night Out. To see if your local community is participating, just head over to the National Night Out website, click on your state and then a list of cities in your state will pop up. Have fun!
