Check out this GREAT tip and recipe idea from reader Karin!  With a few recycled glass jars a couple of bucks, you may be able to solve your mosquito problems!

“Here is a cheap mosquito repellant that WORKS!

I bought a bag if peeled garlic from Walmart for $1.57 enough for three quart jars to place them in the bottom of the jar. To do this, I placed two handfuls of these cloves after I pierced with a fork in the bottom of the jar.  I covered this with boiling water to 1″ over the garlic cloves. Place the lid on top and place in sun for few days to fester/meld.

I have placed a jar at the front and the back doors.  We had a bad mosquito problem and now there are NONE!”

Thanks to Karin for this great tip! We are going to give it a try ourselves as we live close to a lake that really attracts mosquitos!

What do you mean by cloves? Unpeeled garlic cloves or the spice cloves or something else? Also how do you know when the mixture is ready to uncover?

I took that to mean cloves – like from the spice section. Not cloves of garlic. The garlic is already in there.

      HI Mary Jo,

I realized that the quote from the reader was a bit confusing, so I cleaned it up a little so that it made more sense. I am pretty certain she meant the garlic cloves, not other additional cloves.

      Hopefully that clears it up!
      Thanks!

This is only garlic and water. “Cloves” is referring to cloves of garlic, not the other type of cloves

In the produce section of the market there is already peeled garlic. That’s what she means. Walmart has this and price chopper if you live up north lol.

I’m also curious if it repels humans as well? I like the idea, but is it stinky?

Yep – it must because we haven’t seen any! I guess if you are having a problem with them, give this a try. 🙂

So after I prepare the garlic and water and put the lid on, how do the mosquitos
smell the solution from the jar. Do we poke the lid, like make small holes on top.
Thanks I’ll wait for a rely. Diane

Hi Diane – actually, you have the lid off while in use. I suppose you could poke holes in the top, but full exposure is most effective, and full lid closure is most effective for storing after. 😉
