Today’s DIY idea is going to be one of those “ah ha” moments. Do you buy the instant rice cereal? Well, you can actually make your own homemade version quick and seamlessly!
My friend Desiree’ now makes her own and she shares the super easy trick for this homemade baby rice cereal. She also uses brown rice, but you can use any type.
What you need to make your own baby rice cereal:
- brown or white rice, uncooked.
- Clean coffee grinder, blender or food processor
Whatever rice you choose to use, you just simply need to grind it into a fine powder. The best machine is a coffee grinder (completely clean of coffee of course!) or a food processor or high powered blender like Blendtec or Vitamix.
Then store this powder in an airtight container in the pantry for many weeks, or even longer in the fridge.
When you are ready to prepare to serve to baby:
- 1/4 cup of homemade rice powder
- 1/4 cold cup of water
- small pot
- whisk
In a small pot on the stovetop, add the water and rice powder and whisk together. Then bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Once boiling, turn the heat to low and simmer for about 10 minutes. This will be your thick base mixture that will last a couple of days in the fridge. From this portion, just thin with breastmilk, juice, water, formula, etc. and warm like you would any store-bought version.
That’s it!
Would you try making your own baby rice cereal now that you know how simple it is?
Thanks to my friend Desiree’ who shares a bit of her life at DiligenceWithoutFear Blog.

I used to make this for both our kids but prefer washing the grain and drying before grinding. Also you can add yellow lentils or choice of any lentils for protein power!
