I am so excited to be guest posting today!! My name is Shannon from Sew Sweet Cottage blog.

My sew sweet cottage is filled with 4 little kids who keep me busy. My oldest is 11 and has Autism, his name is Justin and he is non-verbal. Life can get a little crazy sometimes!!

I keep my sanity, or what’s left of it, by spending time sewing, decorating, baking, throwing a party, and enjoying life’s little moments. We celebrate all successes in our home, no matter how small and that helps keep us all happy.

A few years ago we had my son Justin’s first “friend” birthday party. This was a big deal for our family to make this party memorable for him. We went all out for our Angry Bird’s themed party and even made a life-sized catapult!! I wanted to decorate the front door with something special and had seen many balloon wreaths on Pinterest. I decided to make one myself and it turned out to be a fun, easy project that took less than 2 hours to make!!

Here’s what you need to make a balloon wreath:

  • 12 or 14 inch straw wreath
  • 2 or 3 small packs greening pins (100 pins in each)
  • Ribbon to wrap around the wreath (I used two large spools from Hobby Lobby) 100-120, 9 inch balloons (I bought mine in bags of 30 at Walmart for $1.00 per bag)
  • pipe cleaners
  • Monogram wooden letter (Hobby Lobby)
  • piece of twine or ribbon for hanger

First, I made a “hanger” out of twine so I could hang it on my door (I just wrapped a piece of knotted twine around the wreath.)  Next I wrapped the straw wreath with ribbon so that it looks good from the sides as well as the back.

The next step is pinning the balloons to the wreath using the greening pins. I usually take two balloons at a time, lay them on top of one another, facing opposite directions, and then pin them in the middle to the wreath. You can use your thumb to push in the pins, but I prefer using a small rubber mallet—save your thumbs!! After the wreath is covered in balloons, you can add the pipe cleaners to accent your wreath. I wrap the pipe cleaners around a pencil to make them spiraled first and then use a greening pin to secure them to the wreath.

The final touch is to add the monogram letter. I use a saw tooth picture hanger with small nails (or tacks) on the back of my letter and then wrap a pipe cleaner through it and then use a greening pin to pin it to the top, right side of the wreath.

And that’s all it takes to add a personalized touch to your home for someone’s special day!
