The other day, our dramatic daughter ran into the house bawling because her “favorite shoes” got wet and ruined! She calmed down and I said, “Honey, don’t worry, they will be good as new by morning!”

“How mommy, they are soaking wet – are you going to put them in the dryer?”

“No, putting tennis shoes in the dryer is a bad idea – let’s just gather some newspapers and I will show you!”

And that’s just what we did!

The easiest, most effective, least damaging way to dry wet shoes is with newspaper!

There is also an added bonus….. newspaper also removes odors naturally. So you are doing double duty!

Here’s how to dry shoes with newspaper:

  1. Stuff the shoe from toe to heel with crumpled up newspaper.  Let this sit for 1-hour.
  2. Remove the newspaper and stuff again with dry newspaper. Let this sit again for a few hours.
  3. Remove that round of newspaper and stuff again with dry newspaper and let it sit for 8-12 hours.

At this point – they will most likely be completely dry and smelling better too! If they are still not quite dry, just repeat with more newspaper and sitting for a few hours until they are dry!

She literally had her shoes back the next morning, dry and happy again!

My mom used to dry ours on a very low oven, works great.

Hi Trish, Newspaper absorbs odors and it is used many places for this purpose! Even dry shoes. 🙂

I put my sneakers on the floor in front of the fridge and the warm air at the bottom dries them perfectly overnight. I don’t have newspaper so I use this method.
