A while ago, we posted our super duper yummy homemade buttermilk ranch dressing. Yes, it is awesome and amazing…. but let’s be honest…. how many of you regularly have or buy buttermilk?
Well, not me! In fact, I have never purchased buttermilk, but I make that awesome dressing from the buttermilk left after making my own butter. But we are a ranch dressing family…. but really kinda snobs about the ranch dressing that we like! If we buy dressing, it is the expensive refrigerator kind called Litehouse. None of us like ranch dressing from the bottles on the shelf.
So I had to find a way to make a version at home that wasn’t expensive and didn’t require fancy ingredients (like buttermilk). So I fumbled around the kitchen and fridge one day and made an Emergency Ranch Dressing!
It is now a favorite when we don’t have buttermilk, and I can whip up a batch in less than 5-minutes! We haven’t bought dressing forever!
This is not quite as tasty as the buttermilk version, but it is a good second and much cheaper/easier and can be made with common ingredients and in a pinch!
Ingredients needed:
- Equal parts of Mayo and Sour Cream (1 cup each is about usually what I do and this feeds our family of 7 for about 2 meals worth of salads)
- Spices of all types… you can use the ones listed in our Buttermilk ranch, but often I don’t have some of these ingredients, so my default spices are a bit of Oregano, bit of Basil and Parsley (or Italian Seasonings) salt, pepper, dill weed and paprika. You can also add a bit of sugar if you want. I just add the spices to taste.
- Then I also add milk until I reach the desired consistency.
To make it:
- Just simply place all of the ingredients in a jar with a lid or a blender bottle.
- Shake it up, check it and add any more spices or milk for desired taste and consistency.
- Shake it up again and serve!
- It will keep in the refrigerator for a few days…. well, I honestly don’t know how long it will last because it never lasts more than a few days in our house with everyone eating it!
- I like using a blender bottle because it has a nice pour spout.
It is seriously that simple! I will whip this up last minute as the table is being set and I am usually done before my family gets it set 🙂
Here’s a printable recipe for you to put into your home binder! AND details on the Home Binder with FREE downloads are HERE.

I love all your recipes and want to say thank you for all the work you do to help us all live more frugally and healthier!!
When I clicked on the print button for the ranch dressing recipe above, my print preview showed that it would take 2 pages to print it because of the pictures that show on the right-hand side of the recipe and instructions. Is there anyway to get rid of the pictures so I can simply print the recipe? This has happened before and stopped me from printing the recipe.
Thank you,
Judith

Hi Judith,
We changed the picture so it should all be on one page now. Also, if you print in black fast draft, it will hardly take any ink. We can’t find a recipe plug-in yet that will allow you to choose whether or not you want the picture printed. Many people want it and so we are torn about including them. But the black fast draft again uses very little ink and so hopefully that will solve most of the problem! If we receive more requests to exclude the pictures, then we will remove them. I wish we could please everyone at once 🙂
