Here’s How Our Kids are Selling Their Handmade Products In The Mall

We love to see businesses and programs that encourage and promote young entrepreneurs – kids doing business.

Delving into how to run a business and then to actually do it is an amazing skill for any kid to learn and experience at least once in their life. Whether the lemonade stand in front of the house on the sidewalk, to something bigger.

This is one area that we have really tried to promote and encourage our kids in. It never hurts a child to experience and learn from business as a kid, regardless of whether they want to go into business as adults.

The experience is priceless.

Our family is and has done a number of things from traditional money-making and small business ideas to online and more modern ways of earning income at home.

But one of those ways has been with handmade jewelry. We have talked about how my girls and I make jewelry and we sell it, especially in the summertime with the farmer’s markets and community craft booths and such.

So when we saw an opportunity at our local mall to encourage the kids to sell their handmade jewelry, we were so excited because it will take the selling and business experience to a whole new level!

Our local mall is having it’s 3rd annual Kidz Biz event where kids, ages 6-17 will be able to sell and promote their business in their own mall kiosk for the day – specifically August 19th from 12-5pm.

They had to fill out an application describing their business, how they plan to market, their initial budget, their projected sales for the day. Once the application was accepted, they then had to go through an interview process to describe their business to the adults coordinating the event.

Once they did these two things, they just had to wait (patiently) for an approval of their business idea and business to be presented at the mall.

During this one-day event, they will set-up, market and sell their products to shoppers in the mall that day. Not only is the booth free for them, they get to keep all of their profits, but they will also be awarding cash prizes to certain kids businesses in certain categories, so they could walk away with more than just their profits and a hands-on learning experience.

So our girls wanted to take their unique jewelry idea and see if they could see them in the mall for the day.

They applied and went through the process.

Their application and interview was approved and they have a spot in the mall on August 19th to sell their products.

What are they selling?

A couple of years ago, my grandma (their great-grandma) and all of us girls came up with a jewelry idea to make wrap around bracelets using denim jeans – basically recycling denim jeans into accessories. We have made more than bracelets in an attempt to use all pieces of the denim, but the denim bracelets have been our main focus and all that they are focusing on for this event (to not overly complicate this process for them).

The bracelets are adorable and “wrap around” your wrist! Since denim is always in style and since denim matches everything, they have been popular when we have sold them in the local area events.

Let me share some examples of their work!

Bracelets made from denim jeans

denim bracelets from old jeans

denim wire wrap around bracelets made with old jeans

Each bracelet is unique and made with all types of denim (the classic blue jean denim, but colored denim too) and with the addition of the beads, they are very fun and unique.

This has been a fun project and side business the past couple of years and now it is fun to see it go to the next level by being able to sell them in the mall!

Finally, if you would like to buy one and support our daughters’ business, we would love to have them make one for you!

The prices are as follows:

    • Small – $4
    • Medium – $5
    • Large – $6
    • Custom charms  – $0.50 – $1.00 each

Each bracelet comes with beads already coordinated in the colors you would like, but if you want a dangling charm of some type (letters and shapes), those are the extra custom charms. 🙂

The shipping is around $3.00.

If you are interested in having them make you a custom bracelet,

please fill out this form and they will be in contact with you!

If you live around Layton, UT, join us at the mall on August 19, from 12pm – 5pm and look for The Denim Bangle booth and buy bracelets on the spot!

After their Kidz Biz day, I will give a report of how it went and perhaps have them write up thoughts on their experience too!

We love seeing kids experiencing life in this capacity! What a great activity for kids to engage in.

Does your local area have anything similar?

Cute as can be! What a great idea! Did I miss the instructions for making these? Or are you only selling them? I thought I’d ask, since I have several boxes of old jeans/denim I need to do something that doesn’t take long.
