Let’s be honest friends. If you are a mom, a shower is a gift. Washing your hair is a day in paradise. I am a work-at-home-mom to 6 adorable, busy, lovable children. I give them attention, focus, instruction, guidance, playtime, chore time, school time and I often have to remind them that I am there, they can need me, they can have my attention and focus. But, when it comes shower time…that’s the only time they seem to want to take advantage of the, “oh, I need mom RIGHT NOW.” I joke with my friends and fellow moms that I haven’t had uninterrupted shower in 10 years, except that it’s not a joke. All of the sudden, anything and everything is needed in those 15-minutes. It’s an enigma for how I can take an uninterrupted shower for even 5-minutes.
So, needless to say, I don’t get a shower everyday. And even though I would like to, washing hair everyday is actually really hard on hair anyway. So good thing my kids are helping to keep my hair healthy. 🙂
But my hair seems to get so nasty and oily and just needs refreshed fast! At least it makes me feel better to find some way to freshen it up and soak up the oils.
That’s where Dry Shampoo is a miracle worker for us moms! BUT..it’s expensive and chemical-laden.
So what if you could create a homemade version that is frugal, easy and natural…would you make it and use it? I bet you would!
And that is what I want to share with you today. In fact, it uses frequently used kitchen staples, that you probably have everything you need to make this today and now. Probably faster than you could take a shower (not to mention faster than running to the store to pick up an expensive bottle of dry shampoo).
We also like to add essential oils and these are our favorite.
I can get these for a VERY affordable price and they are PERFECT for this recipe. Plus, these oils are also used in our homemade, natural cleaning products. Each bottle has hundreds of drops for around $6-$7 and can be used for hundreds of things around your home too. For example, you can see just some lavender essential oil uses and just some lemon essential oil uses. So this recipe no where near scratches the surface of all of the ways you can use the oils, it’s just merely another great use!
Here’s how to get these oils very cheap and my favorite source!
You just need basic ingredients that are found around your kitchen! Here’e the combinations for the different hair colors.

How To Use DIY Dry Shampoo:
-Shake the dry shampoo in its container each time before you use it to ensure it is blended well.
-Use a makeup brush and dip into the dry shampoo mixture. Then, to thin out the mixture, dab it on the counter or lid of your container. Then dab the brush to the roots of your hair.
– Anywhere you feel the oil in your hair, just dab the brush with the thinned out mixture onto that spot.
-With your hair brush, brush your hair to blend it all the way through the strands. (This may take several times)
-This will blend into your hair color.
-Continue to brush to remove any excess dry shampoo.
– Note: you can adjust the color to be darker or lighter based on your hair color. Some may need to add more cocoa powder to make it darker. We shared 3 basic color recipes, but adjust accordingly since there is a wide scale of hair color.
And now with that, I wanted to share the DIY Dry Shampoo is not just for the busy moms. Let’s take this High Maintenance test that we posted on our Facebook page. It was created by the Mommy Talk Mommy Chat Facebook Page.
Can I tell you my score….10. Yes, 10! And guess where that 10 comes from….the “regular massage” one. I gave myself 10-points for this one, but it didn’t specify WHERE I get my massage. And that is at home from my hubby. He gives a really mean back rub that this WAHM needs a few times a week! The part of this test that drives me crazy is the improper spelling on the final point. How many points do I get for that?
Now, if you got a high score on this test, I won’t judge. 🙂 But if you did, then this DIY Dry Shampoo is certainly for you too – not just moms too busy to shower everyday, but for the high maintenance that want super stellar hair. I mean, word has it that one of the most high-maintenance women out there, Kim Kardashian, has quite the beauty routine. One of them is NOT washing her hair very often. Apparently, she only washes it 2-times per week. So if you are one who follows her advice, you will not want to be without this option for your luscious hair in between your 3-5 days washes. 🙂 I personally have never seen a show with a Kardashian in it and really don’t care or understand the hype. But the fact that she only washes her hair every 3-5 days was big international news?!? So, just think of us low-maintenance thrifities over here offering beauty advice to the posh over there. 🙂
The DIY Dry Shampoo for the busy moms and the high-maintenance and everyone in-between. 🙂

That is so funny about the spelling of heels on the last option on that test. I noticed it right away too! LOL And I didn’t really get any score like you too, so I guess I really need to give this shampoo a try. I have been seeing homemade dry shampoo before, but haven’t looked at it close enough to realize how easy it is. Thanks for sharing!

I know what you mean. A good self-care is necessary for every person who cares about it. Anyway, my girlfriend likes to change her hairstyle. However, not so long ago he realized that she could no longer surprise me. So she decided to go to Sugaring in order to try Sugaring at the first time in the life. Among those that my girlfriend became the most unusual and beautiful.
