A few times, I have referenced how we use high quality oils for personal care recipes and for homeopathic care and recipes. High quality oils are absolutely necessary for recipes used on yourself, ingested or any other personal use.
It seems like essential oils are “expensive,” but since most of the bottles are 15 ml, these contain 300 drops of oil. Most uses only use a drop or two, so you have 100+ uses per bottle! This comes out to be much, much cheaper than name-brand OR generic meds and personal care products, but much healthier instead! So for us, we see the value and frugality of using them.
I just wanted to give that background for you so you know where we were coming from.
Ok, so now I want to share our Respiratory and Throat Soothing Essential Oil Blend! This is the “help sooth all of these” common seasonal ailments. One bottle blend and rollerball blend last us forever!
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are basically the super concentrated form of that food/herb. The oil is extracted from the different parts of the plant/food and used for natural homeopathic uses for personal care and for natural cleaning around the home. More About Recipes for Your Own Respiratory and Throat Soothing Essential Oil Blends
I am bringing this up now in June because we woke up and started dealing with a common seasonal ailments with a beginning throat irritation. Yes, it is summer and it seems so off…. but it’s funny because we use our oils about 2-3 times more in the winter to boost immunity (and it works!) but then summer comes and we ease thinking we are safe from germs with the warm weather.
Well, last Saturday, we were at an all day outdoor event and thought it would be warm like it has been. Well, half way through the day, a cold front came through and we all got a little cold…. which weakens your immune system to make you more susceptible to catching something. We were around thousands of people and touching handles, and rides that many thousands had touched and a few days later…..common ailments! We did not use oils before we went or during as it was “summer.”
So, you just never know when you might need a natural boost!
Here’s the best oils for respiratory and and throat soothing!
Note that each of them actually has dozens of uses for many things, they are not limited to this purpose.
- Lemon Essential Oil
- Peppermint Essential Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Frankincense Essential Oil
- Wintergreen Essential Oil
- Eucalyptus Essential Oil (not pictured, but read about using in tissues here)
Each of these oils has immune boosting properties and together they can help sooth a broader range of ailments. We also have recommend lemon, lavender and peppermint for cleaning!
Basically, you can use one or all. The more you combine together, the better soothing blend you will have. You will just make a blend to use and then use that blend regularly throughout your ailment.
How To Take These Oils or How To Make Blends
There are several methods. I am going to share them with you from super easy and convenient to a more medicinal type of method. Each method is entirely up to you! Note that you can do all of these too!
1. Hand and Cup Method
Drip a drop of oil or a few oils in your hand and rub together and then “cup” your hands around your face/nose and take several deep breaths of the oils to open up your respiratory system and to start soothing. You will want to do this several times a day.
The benefit of this one is that it is an immediate, easy, on-the-go method.
2. Diffuse the combo of oils in an oil diffuser. We’ve mentioned oil diffusers before and here’s a couple of ideas for you.
This is the exact diffuser that we use and it has been more than worth the investment. You can get a really good quality one here and you can get a free on if you buy the essential oils starter kit.

The benefit of this one is that everyone in the room/home gets the therapeutic benefits and it can also help boost immunity for others at the same time.
3. Massage lymph nodes with an oil blend.
Just in the palm of your hand, take a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, and add a few drops of oils (like 1 drop of a few different ones) and mix with your finger. Then apply to the base of your neck, behind your ears, chest and other lymph nodes. You will want to do this a few times a day.
4. Create a blend spray for spraying on yourself, in your mouth and around your environment.
This is one of our preferred methods. Take a carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, and fill your mini-glass spray bottle with 2/3 to 3/4 full of the oil. The add 10 drops of lemon and lavender and about 5 drops of the other oils. This spray will now last for a long while and you can store it in a cool dark place (like a cupboard) and use it as needed.
To use this, you can spray pillows, environments, your body, in your mouth (it doesn’t taste good :)) and use it as needed wherever!
5. Roller Ball Method
This is also our favorite. We pretty much always have #4 and #5 ready to go whenever we need it! You can buy these small glass roller ball tubes online and then make your own blends and “roll it on” wherever you need it! We make the blend the same as the spray recipe in #4. And then we rub it on lymph nodes, temples, chest, bottom of the feet (the feet are a GREAT place when everyone is laying down/sleeping!), back of the neck, etc. I can also take these on the go.
6. Ingesting Ideas *Please note, this HAS to be oils that are certified pure and safe for internal consumption.
Finally, one final way (recommended for adults only) is to take this internally. You can do this a couple of ways. You can see that we have pictured a “dropper” bottle. The formula/recipe is the exact same as the spray bottle and then you just take a 1/4 to 1/2 dropper under your tongue. It won’t taste good – sorry. 🙂
If you can’t stand the taste (like me), consider buying empty veggie caps (you can get them at any health food store and put a drop or two (DO NOT fill it up!) or each oil in the capsule and then take it this way. You won’t taste it, but it can get into your system. I am not the biggest fan of this as it isn’t convenient and easy. And honestly, you really can’t “drip” the oil into the capsules. You need to have a dropper that you can stick into the bottle of oil and then drip into the capsule. So it is quite a bit of work.
I wanted to make a note that internal ingestion is sworn by many, but it is actually a slower process to get into your blood stream and my lowest recommended method. Applying to your skin with some of the other methods presented, will actually get into your blood stream faster, according to many experts on essential oils. So not only is that the easiest, but apparently more effective. However, I still wanted to show you all of the methods I know about!
For purchasing small glass spray or dropper bottles, Amazon has many that are a good price HERE. You may also be able to find them at a local health food store.
For the roller ball applicators, Amazon has super great prices that make them HERE like .50 each glass roll-on bottle.
A couple of years ago, I did purchase the roll-on applicator bottles and the spray and dropper bottles in bulk like this (the bottles came as 6 packs and the roll-on bottles as 24 pack) and then I have had enough bottles to create all kinds of blends and just keep refilling as needed. So it was quite convenient!
Again, I just wanted to mention again the importance of using a high quality oil that is safe for internal consumption. I don’t cut corners on this as the move to essential oils for many purposes already saves us tons of money over store-bought versions. Essential oils have been a huge blessing to our family and I am so thankful that I started using them for personal use a few years ago! I have used them around the home for cleaning for probably 8+ years!
Finally, I wanted to state that investing in essential oils can be a very beneficial thing to do. If you set aside $20 or even $10 a month to start an oil bank, you will have a nice collection for many home remedies and uses in no time. I mention this because after a few years of using them personally with success, we want to finally share many home remedies, ideas and even recipes for personal care products, many of which will include essential oils, so that you can continue to become even more and more frugal!

Hi Cassie,
I love reading all your posts. I am going to be purchasing the blends to start with because the oils for personal use are so expensive to “go all out” right away. I wanted to know if you are using blends how do you prepare them for roller ball or mist? Not sure how I would do that. Also, I purchased the diffuser you suggested on Amazon and wanted to know about how many drops. I have a grandson with respiratory issues and possible asthma and wanted to try this for him. Hi – just found your site and I really like the advice/tips you have provided. I am just starting out in essential oils myself and found that Spark oils seem to be as good a quality, and MUCH less expensive to the other 2 major brands out there. (sparknaturals.com) Also, if you look online, you can generally find 10% off coupons.

I don’t know if you realize this or not but you are telling people to in the beginning of your article to use wintergreen & eucalyptus along with a few other oils. These two oils are NOT SAFE for internal use or ingestion!! Your info is very misleading.
