CABLE COSTS ARE RISING – LOCK IN YOUR RATES!

Cable TV

We always like to hearken back to the motto of our site….”Helping you stretch your budget in every area of life”!  We love to share deals, coupon matchups, but also provide information on how to save money in your home.  As we read more about the rising costs of cable in the USA Today, we thought we really needed to find a way to cut on these costs – and we did!

If you’ve been following us for a while, you might remember our post on how to totally cut your cost on cable….by not having it at all.  🙂  We loved our date night in last night watching our favorite sitcoms of the week on the network websites!  But, if your family loves having the cable box (how we loved DVR!), this post is for you!

So, here’s the scoop.  Cable costs are rising especially in 2010!  This is being caused much in part by broadcasters rising costs, the introduction of 3-D television (prices rose back when Hi-Def was introduced), negotiations of major sports events, and miscellaneous upgrades.  Obviously, when these fees are increased they are passed on to you and I.  (Although, I still remember when Dish Network went to toe against a major network – they didn’t want to pass the cost to their subscribers and stopped carrying the channel.  After one day the broadcaster caved and Dish subscribers were saved money.  Those were the days!!).  So, what can you do?

Lock your rate in!  Josh Smith provides some great tips on this very topic.  Instead of allowing those larger costs come to your door, if you work with your cable company you can lock your rate in at a significantly less amount (in some cases).  This usually involves a longer term commitment – in other words giving them something in return for the lower cost.

Please note the following phone numbers and links to the online chats with your company’s customer service:

  • Time Warner – Online chat with customer service – 1-866-681-9272
  • Comcast – Online chat with customer service – 1-800-266-2278
  • Dish Network – Online chat with customer service – 1-888-686-2388
  • Direct TV – E-mail customer service – 1-888-777-2454

We would love to hear from you concerning your experience (whether now or past) in trying to negotiate your rates with your cable company.  Leave us a comment…we love hearing from you!
