Learn how to make finger paint with flour with this easy, frugal, non-toxic recipe.
I love this recipe and my kids do too. It’s just too easy and you likely have everything you need already on hand. It only requires 4 simple ingredients to make finger paint with flour.
Not only is this homemade finger paint recipe frugal, but because it uses items out of your kitchen, it is also non-toxic, so if your little ones happen to eat it, put their fingers in their mouths, etc. it will be totally safe.
Perfect Homemade Finger Paint Recipe for Kids
When you have kids, you want to find easy, fun, creative, safe and frugal ways of encouraging creative play – you know, the play that doesn’t involve a screen!
Well, we are constantly coming up with many activities and ideas around here. In fact, so much so that our 3-year thinks that DIY experiments and activities are a constant activity that when we are actually doing something else, he asks “is it experiment time yet?”
It’s quite cute. He also is the same one that is quite the adventurer and when you hear him say, “watch this,” you go running to save him!
So, yeah, we got to keep him busy and active.
We have found that homemade finger paints made with flour really stimulate his creativity and keep him occupied for hours.
Homemade Finger Paint with Only 4 Non-Toxic Ingredients
Like I mentioned above, this recipe calls for only 4 ingredients and they are likely all in your kitchen right now.
Those ingredients needed for your homemade finger paint are:
- Flour
- Salt
- Water
- Food Coloring (even natural solutions)
These ingredients aren’t meant to make artwork that will be displayed in the National Gallery of Art in D.C. to last forever, although you and your kid might think it is “national display worthy,” the point is really for entertainment.
With that, these ingredients don’t seem to hold up for a permanent picture, but they do the job just fine for a short time. I would suggest snapping a picture of the artwork so you have a way of keeping it forever.
For me, the part I love most is free-paint-play without toxins. That’s why I just love the ingredients in this!
If you have a gluten-free child, you can also make this with gluten-free flour too. We share a great gluten-free flour recipe that is very much like the real stuff!
Where can kids use the homemade finger paint with flour?
One of the things that is great about this recipe is that you can use it all year round. The summer is a super easy time, because you can whip up a batch of this fast and send them outside to paint on paper, or the sidewalk. It will just wash off of the sidewalk with a hose.
In the winter, you can have them at the table with paper, but we have also let our kids play in the bathtub with these finger paints. There is an extra element of fun when they get to paint in the tub! So you can consider making this and letting them play with it all year round.
For another idea, sрrеаd ѕоmе newspaper оn the grоund for large mеѕѕу fun too.
I always like to make thеѕе fun activities somewhat еduсаtiоnаl, ѕо I’ve dоnе thе fingеr раintѕ on a sheet раn аnd рrасtiсеd раinting numbers and lеttеrѕ with my сhildrеn too. Some of my kids really latched on to this form of literal “hands on” learning, solidifying the information they were learning. And since it is on a sheet pan, you can just stick it in the sink and rinse the paint away.
A Frugal Solution to Finger Paint
We’ve shared how is simple with only 4 ingredients, plus non-toxic. We’ve also shared play ideas with it. But we can’t forget one major point – how frugal this homemade finger paint is to make!
Compared to store-bought, it’s significantly cheaper. Store bought finger paint is not that cheap, but even more so, it isn’t always totally non-toxic. However, considering that the main ingredient is flour, it is one of the cheapest kitchen staples you can find. Salt is also another incredibly cheap ingredient, perhaps even cheaper than the flour, but you use just a tiny bit anyway. The water is also free.
The real expense comes with the food coloring. Store-bought food colors go a long way and thus it is still a frugal alternative to store bought finger paint.
But who are we kidding, you came here for the recipe, not my whole explanation on why you should make the recipe. To excelsior and beyond! (Or just to the recipe)
