Okay – so today is a Christmas baking day! I labeled it “The Thrifty Couple Christmas Baking Day,” but it should really be the “The Thrifty Family Christmas Baking Day!” My kids love this part of Christmas, especially to see (and taste test 🙂 ) what is created by all of us!
We do have a challenge in our home that is a very tough obstacle to overcome this time of year especially! We have to bake around allergies! One of our kids has a VERY deadly peanut and tree nut allergy! I know, it is tragic, however, God is good as he has preserved her life thus far! We must take very strict precautions, and it does make shopping a challenge! Thankfully, many companies are aware of the increasing rise of peanut and tree allergies and are labeling and producing products that will accomodate. The key to this – it is mostly name brand that does this! Generic is usually all processed together and not safe.
You would think that this makes for very expensive shopping – well not in our household!!! We use coupons on sale items and stock up on them. So the fun baking things that are safe for our child will be included!!! Makes her not feel so odd 😉 We also make special treats just for her as the treats from friends and neighbors pile in, she indulges on the things we made and not feel left out!
So, we woke up this morning to prepare – here is what we did:
- Go shopping in The Thrifty Couple store! We just headed to our storage room, each with a bag in hand, and started pulling things off the shelf to bring up to the kitchen! Here is what we found!!!
- Computer up to “google” recipes with these combinations of items for some yummy creative ideas!
- Christmas music playing
- Dishwasher cleared out so we can put things in it immediately and all other dishes clean!
- Disinfected counter surfaces
- Hands washed
We are ready! What is the plan……I don’t know! Anyone that knows me knows I am a spontaneous cooker/baker! I just say, “here’s what we got, where is google?!” So, as far as what we are making, I guess you will have to check back and see……
We have not purchased any specific items for this event today yet – thus far, everything we are using is from what we already have (eggs, milk and other misc. in fridge ;)! Money spent thus far: $0.00 (other than the times over the past few months that we purchased these super cheap and stocked up at 65% or more savings!!!)
What a great feeling, let’s see how it goes! This will be a couple of day process, we will update as we go.
