What a great idea! I so wish I had seen something like this when my girls were babies!

I have always been able to buy plain white or solid color onesies for a very cheap price, even brand new, and just coupled them with cute patterened pants.

But this is so much cooler!

AND….

  • It’s cheap to make with just an extra strip of fabric in approximately 42″ x 8.5″ (varies depending on size too!)

  • It only requires basic sewing skills (which is what I need!)
  • It takes 10 minutes
  • It is unique, adorable and fun!

So, you can make these for your own baby, but think about how cool of a baby gift this would be?  Handmade clothing was always our most treasured gifts!

If you were to buy a pack of 3 -5 onesies for around $5-$6 and then coordinating strips of fabric in 42″ x 8.5″ sizes (approximately), and 1-hour, then you can have 3-5 cute and unique baby gifts for under $10!

We found 3 different Tutorials for you to learn how to quickly make your DIY 10-Minute Onesie Dress.

Erin at Sutton Grace has made quite a few different variations with easy to follow instructions.  She also adds extra embellishments at the top where the collar is with the excess fabric!

      Hi Mary,

We have seen the packs of onesies at Walmart, Target, Kohls and more. They come packaged rolled up in a bag hanging. We have found that they come in a pack of 5 white ones or 3 colored ones for around $6 each pack.

Hopefully that helps! If anyone else has seen them, please leave a comment!

When working with a striped pattern, make sure you cut it on the stripe so the line at the top will be even

I was wondering do you hand stitch or use a sewing machine! and if a sewing machine how do you do it without sewing the oneie’s together?

It’s easy to sew the skirt to the onesie with a machine. Remove the piece on your machine that allows you to work on shirt sleeves then slide the bottom end of the onesie over it just like you would a shirt sleeve.

Google “What is a free arm on a sewing machine (and how to use it!)“ for a tutorial. It looks like it explains it pretty good. 🙂

That might be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! I may have to make one just for the fun of it since my girls are 20 and 16!

Love it. I am not going to baby shower, but my gift will be there. I don’t know the mother. Yet I help raised the father. This is inexpensive but cute gift. Sewing up the onesie dresses tonight. Thanks for sharing.
