We love berry season! We also love that berry season also coordinates with the patriotic holidays! You can make some amazing treats of all kinds with berries this time of year. It is really endless. Just a few minutes on Pinterest and you have more ideas than you can even fathom.
Well, I am also a busy, health-conscious mom and while I allow sweet treats and goodies here and there, I prefer to make and provide healthier options. My kids go ga-ga over anything that is fun shaped and fun to eat – so by making it healthy instead, they eat it up without a complaint. But berries are hard for anyone to complain over. 🙂 I am sure if I had brussels sprouts kabobs in a cute shape, I would still probably get complaints. But my family does love pan roasted brussels sprouts – that’s the only recipe I have found they will eat them in so far!
But this isn’t about brussels sprouts – or any veggies. It is about well loved fruits in a fun, patriotic snack! These Flag Fruit Kabobs are a hit anywhere we serve them. They are easy, fun and festive! They are affordable during the summer patriotic holidays too.
I probably don’t need to give too much explanation on how to create these, but let me break it down to make the process super slick!
Ingredients needed for Flag Fruit Kabobs:
- 54 blueberries
- 5 Bananas (cutting each into ll slices for 54 pieces)
- 20-30 strawberries -you need 60 strawberry pieces, so 30 halved or 20 divided in 3rds or 4ths. This really depends on the size of the strawberry, which varies greatly. You want pieces close to the size of the bananas.
- 12 wooden skewers
How To Make Flag Fruit Kabobs:
- Wash all berries and cut the strawberries and bananas based on the description above.
- Start by threading 9 blueberries on 6 skewers.
- Then on the blueberry skewers, start with bananas and thread banana, strawberry, banana, strawberry, etc. until you have 3 bananas and 3 strawberries.
- Then begin to thread the remaining 6 skewers with the strawberries and bananas, threading back and forth with the strawberries and bananas. Start with strawberries and end with strawberries until you have 13 fruits. You will have 6 banana layers and 7 strawberry layers per skewer.
- Arrange them on a plate or platter in the formation shown in the picture:
- Serve immediately!
- Note: don’t make these too far ahead of when you plan to serve. The bananas will turn brown within a couple of hours.
You can also display upright by sticking skewers into foam or watermelon base. They have to be stuck into something to be displayed upright because the fruit will eventually slide off due to gravity. 🙂
Enjoy the healthy, fun, refreshing treat at your next gathering or just because!
