Are you looking for a laptop for your young children this year but not wanting to pay hundreds of dollars? Walmart.com is offering a deal on a refurbished 7-Inch Sylvania netbook with a free carrying case. We wanted to share this with you but also help you understand this item a bit better. First, this is not a laptop that you would be buying for yourself. But this could be a great option for allowing children learn how to use their “first-computer” prior to granting them access to the home computer. 🙂
Here’s the free carrying case offered:
We’ve tried to compile some of our thoughts about this netbook:
Pros:
- Built in Wi-Fi means you can easily connect this netbook to your home wireless internet or hotspot
- The description states you can easily surf the web, enjoy music, videos and images, while having some simple gaming options
- You can select two different color options (silver and red)
- The 7-Inch screen can be a perfect size for young children
- There is no built in web-cam – Although the Walmart site lists this as a con, we think its an advantage as its an additional layer of protection when the child is on-line.
- Free carrying case means not needing any additional expense over the price of this netbook
- A refurbished model means you’re not giving a brand new laptop to a young child. We just saw on a chat yesterday that a 2-year old decided to play Angry Birds on her mom’s iPad in the bath tub – let’s just say the iPad is now a “bath toy”.
Cons:
- This is definitely a laptop for younger children. As it runs Windows CE (a Smart Phone operating system) already installed on the netbook, it won’t run the same software as your home computer
- Although it doesn’t come a mouse included, you can either buy the $5 mouse on the same page for the computer or use an old USB mouse (or buy one for cheap as one of the options) to help your child with navigation
We hope this helps you determine whether this netbook might be of interest to your family. This item qualifies for FREE shipping to your home which helps make it an even better deal!

thanks, I was looking for a kid computer that was not of the “Vtech” kind and more like a real pc. Of course WinCe is coming off and Linux is going on.
