when the girls were younger we would either #1 have dinner at home w/them on Valentine’s Day, #2 feed them early then have a nice dinner alone, #3 barter w/a friend/neighbor who didn’t/couldn’t go out & have them watch the girls while we went on a picnic (we lived in southern CA so that depended on weather – sometimes we had to resort to picnic in the apt.). Since they’ve grown & gone we usually have a nice quiet dinner here at the house by ourselves or have a picnic (we live in FL now, so again, depends on weather). OR my mom will have us over (dad died 16 months & now she has a new “beau” so not sure what this year will hold).

I would like to enter. A nicer than normal home cooked meal by hubby is better than any fancy dinner out. semtaylor(at)yahoo(dot)com

Thrifty Valentine tip: Buy Valentine’s at the dollar store. And don’t go out for dinner on Valentine’s day, make something romantic at home.

For Valentine’s day my husband and I spend some time making Valentine keepsakes with the children with their hand prints and they each decorate their own heart and we put in in a scrapbook that we update each Valentine’s Day and plan on giving it to each of them when they are older. For us, because we have 5 children and not a lot of money, we create a “special” dinner at home consisting of each of our favorite foods and desserts and eat by candlelight when the children go to bed and enjoy our quiet time.
Lynn
My thrifty Valentine’s Day tip is to have a nice dinner at home. We sit on our deck and have a dinner by candlelight. We can enjoy each other and our favorite food without spending a fortune.

What I like to do is I scour the local paper’s restaurant menus they posted as well as online for the cheapest menu (prix fixe dinner) posted. I also see if they will take restaurant.com certificates that night (some do not)! That’s how I try to make eating out Valentine’s Day night cheaper! Thanks for the entry!
Julia
We usually don’t go out to dinner Valentine’s day, but instead celebrate the weekend before or after so we are able use either our Entertainment book coupons or other double dollar deal certificates.

well im the 270th comment here. Hope I get this for my hubby for valentine gift surprise. You thrifty couple are the best. I just started following you in last few weeks. My husband asked me the other day how I’m getting all these deals. I told him THRIFTYCOUPLE.COM. Well, I now caught him looking at your website yesterday. So cute!

I used to work in a restaurant and one tip I’ll give for valentines day is to go out for lunch instead of dinner. It’s cheaper and there are less people that go out for lunch and then you can have a nice dinner at home.

I think anything handmade is not only thrifty but means a lot also. I like to do things like make chocolate heart cookies with “i love you” spelled out on them!

Thrifty valentine idea: To have an inexpensive candlelit meal at home.

We usually rent a movie and watch it with the kids and THEN go out a week or two later when our favorite resteraunt does a discount meal. ($52.80 for 2 instead of like $150!!!) How is that for Thrifty!

i try to save money by making my own gifts for my husband —poems, cards , i made him a little cookie bouquet one year—- heart shaped cake and so on. we have also made a nice romantic dinner at home too !!

The way I save money on valentines day is… We have 7 children, and when they go trick or treating they bring back loads of candy . I freeze most of the chocolate. So when Valentines day rolls around I thaw some of the chocolate , melt it down ,pour it into rose shaped molds, and make chocolate roses foe them. It’s cheap, and they love it. Then I make a nice dinner for the family, and we go through old pictures together. Cheap, easy, fun, and memorable.

I believe the thriftiest way to save money on valentines day is don’t splurge! Plan something special with the ones you love.. a walk in the park, a nice dinner at home, curling up on the couch watching a love story! 🙂
Kristen
Restaurants are usually over crowded, so we like to stay home and cook a new recipe together.
