My sister is a chef and she says that V-day is the WORST time to go to a restaurant! Since so many people go that day to eat, there is a huge amount of prep beforehand in the kitchen. This means your food is not as fresh and the quantity/quality is not as great.
Her best v-day instead was when her hubby had a rose-petal bath ready for her when she came home with a mix cd he premade of her favorite love songs. He fried some steaks while she unwinded, had a dress laid out for her, candles lit up all over the house and he dressed up in a suit. The only thing he paid for was a small box of gourmet truffles and some champagne he got on discount. They shared these after dinner. All can be planned in advance for little to no cost, especially with the amazing deals you post to save us $$$!

Since this year we only have one income instead of two coming in, we decided to save the best restaurant gift card to use for our Valentine’s dinner and also agreed that we do not need to purchase items for each other, that it is more important to spend time together.

My thrifty valentine tip is all about homemade! Printable cards and decor especially. Plus, I buy kids valentines cards on clearance and save them, haven’t had to buy any in a while!

I dislike the crowds for a Valentines Day dinner, so I made it a tradition to make an extra special meal at home – making something more elaborate than usual, and splurging on ingredients I can’t usually afford.
In 2004 I was very pregnant and spent most of the day on the 13th making a special dinner of Indian food that night. We took a walk on the beach and my husband found a heart-shaped rock for me. After the Indian food and a little romance, I started getting “cramps” that kept me from sleeping well. I thought my stomach was disagreeing with dinner, but my husband said he felt fine.
Of course, as several hours passed without my cramps letting up, we thought it might be a good time to call our midwives. Sure enough, we were in labor a week early and had our firstborn in the quiet morning hours at home the next day. Now we have something/someone to celebrate every Valentines Day – our firstborn son!

I am making my hubby a coupon book for Valentines. One with special coupons like… make you favorite dinner, massage, pedicure, stop bickering, you win
Free, but very meaningful to my hubby. Especially the “you win” coupon

My Husband loves cookies…..so to save $$ our kids and I make him ‘giant’ cookie cake and decorate it at home…..premade cookie mix and icing a few m&m candies……a lot cheaper than buying from the bakery…and he is thrilled and I got to spend some fun time with our girls…..win, win!
Stacey
Like you on FB! Would love this to give to my DD who is dying for an iPod!

We save money by not really celebrating Valentine’s Day. I don’t need overpriced flowers to know he loves me.

We don’t do much for Valentine’s day since my husband is not the romantic type. We usually save some good steaks from the cow we had butchered last spring so we fix those along with other things. Then depending on when it lands we might go rent a movie (which for us will only cost one dollar since all we have in our town are those machines in the store) and just relax.
