We do not do anything for Valentines Day. We raincheck a night out as valentines day is the busiest time to go out to dinner and we prefer to avoid that whole mess.

A good way to keep the cost of a Valentine’s Day date is to be creative and crafty. There are so many great sites that provide ideas for homemade items as gifts. A homemade meal and time spent in each other’s company is a wonderful way to share the holiday.

My husband and I typically go somewhere child friendly this night with our 3 year old daughter because we celebrate our wedding anniversary on the 18th of Feb. TO save money though we do not go to steakhouses or places who tend to make tons of money on nights like this.

Ways to save money for Vday…
Send the kids to a relative willing to babysit.
Set up your dining room table or lay a blanket in the living room floor with dim lighting and a variety of finger foods.
Start a fire in the fireplace.
Play soft music.
Run a bath in the garden tub with candles surrounding the tub.
All these things can be done at home using things you already have.

We very seldom get each other anything. That saves money!

We stay in for Valentine’s day and have a “red” dinner. Red spagetti dinner, red punch and red dessert. Cheaper than going out and it is fun for the kids.

We normally don’t get each other anything but if we do, we try to make sure it’s something that is special. We don’t buy something just because it’s Valentine’s Day.

The last few years we have celebrated Valentine’s with friends. We buy crab legs when they are on sale in January and cook them ourselves. Everyone brings a side – we get a gourmet meal at a budget price!

We make handmade cards with the kids, and I try to fix an extra sweet dessert for them. For just us time, we usually grab a bottle of cider and watch a movie or make our own dance floor in the living room.
