Bright and early this morning, Thrifty Al picked up our next basket of organic produce from our produce co-op called Bountiful Baskets. As a recap, we try to order every two weeks (unless they sell out before we remember to reserve one!) and we order the organic basket of produce for $25. The basket contains 1/2 organic vegetable and 1/2 organic fruit. Anyone can order as long as you have a co-op in your area. Bountiful Baskets covers many states across the west here. Also, they do have the conventional basket for $15 which also contains approximately the same amount of fruits and veggies as the organic basket.
Here’s a picture of what we got this morning:
We never know what we are going to get – it is literally different every week. But it is soooo much yummy fun to try and explore new fruits and veggies and enjoy some of our favorites.
Here’s a breakdown of what we got:
- 1 Organic celery
- 1 lb. bag organic baby carrots
- 4 organic artichokes
- 1 bunch organic chard
- 1 bunch organic radishes
- 1 head organic cabbage
- 11 organic bananas
- 8 organic peaches
- 8 organic plums
- 1 1lb. package organic strawberries
- 2 organic mangoes
- 1 organic watermelon
- 1 bag organic green grapes
As usual, we love our basket of organic produce. We are so thankful to have an option to get it cheap. It definitely helps keep the grocery budget in check. There are many produce co-ops and grocery co op groups and it’s various forms across the nation that you can join and be a part of. A good place to start looking is at a the site localharvest.org (which id going to help you get organic local food) or coopdirectory.org (I am not sure how updated this site is as our area’s listings were old and many not listed, but at least worth a shot!) or search produce co-op your state under google and see what listings come up. Also, Money Saving Mom posted an article on how to start your own produce co-op, especially if you could not find one in your area.
