Last night I was running some necessary errands and planned to only make a quick stop to grab four of our grocery staples: milk, cheese, eggs and lettuce. So I threw a few coupons in my purse to stop by the store to grab those deals, but while I was there I stumbled upon some awesome markdowns! The problem though with running to the store to grab a “few things” and not a planned trip is that I ended up buying a lot more than expected! However, it was all pretty good deals, but certainly a “Not-So-Extreme” shopping trip.
Does this happen to you? You plan on grabbing just the “milk and eggs” and come out with a whole lot more??
Here’s what I bought:
- 1 5-lb bag of Tillamook Shredded Cheese normally $16.99 on sale for $11.99. Then used $1.00/1 printable = final is $10.99
- 1 Gallon milk sale for $2.39. Then used $1.00/1 milk coupon from mailer (we still have the .75 printables to use in the future) = final is $1.39
- 1 10-bag of potatoes sale for $2.49
- 1 Kroger 16 oz. sour cream sale for $1.99
- 1 Kroger 16 oz. sour cream sale for $1.99
- 18 eggs sale for $2.39
- 1 package of strawberries sale for $1.99
- 1 head or red leaf lettuce sale for .99
- 1 Spring Mix lettuce normally $2.99 marked down to $1.69
- 3 bags of Dole Salad Complete mixes normally $2.99 marked down to $1.49 each = final is $4.47
- 1 Pull-Ups wipes sale for $2.99. Then used $2/1 coupon from mailer = final is .99
- 1 package of organic powdered sugar normally $1.34 marked down to .69
- 3 tubs of organic raw sugar (so excited about this find!!) normally $6.99 each marked down to $3.29 each = final is $9.87
Summary: The total AFTER sales and markdowns was $43.93. I then used a WHOPPING $4 in coupons = $39.93. I am not sure of my exact savings because most the unplanned items were markdowns that were at least 50% off, so I probably saved over 50% when considering these finds.
I only had 2 cups of sugar left and so I was planning just to restock on regular white sugar for the cheapest option on my next “planned” shopping trip, but since I found organic raw sugar, I was doing back flips as it comes out to be around the same price with the clearance price! I didn’t really save on the sugar over my original plan, I just upgraded for the same cost!

Robyn, it was a promotion a few weeks back that is over now. We posted about it on the site here (https://thethriftycouple.com/2011/07/29/milk-coupon-for-1-00-off-any/), but since it is over, the link is no longer working. Hopefully we will see more though!
