This is weird for me! I am telling you about my essential oil journey and have landed at the last place on essential oil earth I thought I would land.
You see, I just joined Young Living as a wholesale customer, with the option to build a team to share with others.
Typing those words are shocking to me.
Why?
Well, for two big reasons.
Reason #1: I had a disdain for network marketing businesses for many years.
I was deeply burned and disappointed with my first journey in network marketing for another direct sales company. I was excited and gung-ho based on false promises and rewards. This experience contributed to about $10,000 of debt mostly in regards to the “required to be successful” purchase of inventory. This $10,ooo was a growing part of the $108,000 of our total debt. The purpose of my joining this business in the first place was to help get me and my husband out of the debt we were in. The exact opposite was the case. I instead “bought” my way up the ladder to get there as fast as possible to make big time $$$$. That did not happen.
As I look back, I know many of the things I did wrong. I didn’t grow organically. It was fabricated. I “bought” my way up the ladder. I was more concerned with making money than I was selling a good product to customers in need. Could I have climbed up the ladder? Yes, it would have been slower, it would have been lower paychecks, but they would have been real paychecks. Not paychecks paying me back for some of my expenses. Not paychecks to put a slight dent in the debt. If it was $100, it would have been $100 in the bank. But instead, it was $1,000 to pay off a part of my credit card that I had used specifically for this business with $0 in the bank. See the difference?
Since then, I have watched many other fail at network marketing or direct sales for much of the same reasons. I have also watched others truly succeed by having a passion for the product and the people they were helping and having slow, gradual, organic, real growth and paychecks.
Reason #2: In my vast experience with oils I thought most brands’ quality were the same
I have used essential oils for over 12 years. I have used brands of many types and I didn’t see real differences in most of them. I was introduced to another brand and became a loyal customer. I was a loyal customer for about three years. I still presented many brands on our site when I shared recipes.
Then one day, a friend had an excess of Young Living oils. She gave me three roller balls of blends that she had. I opened them and compared them to the equivalent of the other brand. I went in with a negative mindset because I didn’t want them to be better or the best. I smelled and used them.
I was shocked.
I let my husband use them. He was shocked.
We both commented that, “We hate to say it, but I think Young Living is a superior brand” based on the effectiveness and the more true smell. I denied it because I don’t like network marketing companies. I didn’t want to support it based on my previous experiences with similar companies. But, I used those Young Living oils faithfully from that point forward and didn’t tell anyone (except my husband) which brand I preferred.
I continued to be a “loyal customer” of this other company’s oils…but I wasn’t using them.
That was a wake up call. I stopped buying oils for a couple of years and decided I needed to use the oils I had and look at other options, but certainly not support any mom trying to make a little extra $$ through a direct sales company – that was NOT going to happen
As time went on, I had many, many friends and even family that were joining Young Living. None of them ever pressured me, but they told me about their oils.
I shut my ears to what they were saying and tried to rebuttal everything they said, whether just in my mind or occasionally actually verbalizing it to them. I did not want to indicate for one second that I thought it was a superior product because I would be “roped in” and “duped out of thousands” to sell them too.
At this point, although I had personally experienced the difference in effectiveness with the Young Living oils, I hadn’t ever listened to any of my friends to fully understand why they were better.
Then, I started to see so many amazing results with Thieves oil and cleaning around the home. The biggest was when a good friend that I highly respect posted a before/after picture of cleaning her oven with Thieves. I was completely amazed. I had seen one post after another showing cleaning and other results from using Thieves, but it was this oven cleaning post that really sealed the deal for me.
Up to this point, you haven’t seen a homemade oven cleaner on our site because I have been trying and trying for years to make one. I am the homemade cleaners queen (each with essential oils), but I couldn’t crack the code. I HATED the thought of how harsh and awful commercial oven cleaners were, especially on an appliance that my food was being heated in and potential leaching hazards. So, I had a super dirty oven! But at least I wasn’t using chemicals.
Once I saw her results, I knew I couldn’t avoid it any longer if I really wanted the best natural solutions for my family. I told this friend the above story you just read.
Then I asked her to tell me about why Young Living seems to be more effective from my personal experiences (with me probably trying nearly every brand available up to that point over 12 years) and from what I was seeing from others’ experiences.
She taught a little class for me.
It actually started to make sense.
I had to throw away my one bad experience from another direct sales/network marketing company with an unrelated product to this. I know my attitude and my heart was originally all about the money, especially as I was in a place in my life where that was what was important. I did it wrong. And the results were terrible. But I cannot fairly make this blanket statement for all representatives in that company and I certainly could not do the same for Young Living as a company and for the Young Living reps.
The women I know who are a part of Young Living are kind, gracious, patient, successful and trying to earn a little extra for their families as stay-at-home or those who desire to be stay-at-home moms. If I really liked the product, it occurred to me that it was so unfair of me to come in with my prejudices and refuse to give them my business while buying less superior products, whose profits were just going into big corporate pockets (I also bought my oils off Amazon frequently) instead of those stay-at-home moms. What silliness.
So, I bit the bullet after hearing why my personal use and the personal use of others I witnessed was so effective that I signed up to be a customer. I have been a customer since November – so for five months at the time of writing this. At least that is the beginning of my Young Living story. I hope and pray that the rest will be one where I can be gracious, helpful, honest and teaching others how to use these oils effectively and cost effectively too.
This is the part where I am now going to apologize to you.
I have been saying for all of these years on our site that the quality of the oils does not really matter in cleaning products and diffusing.
I have only said it matters for personal care and that I thought there were several brands that would be sufficient for personal care and internal use.
I was wrong. I have personally been injured by “high quality” oils that I thought were safe for personal topical use as well as internal use. To my defense, these companies made these claims that they were safe for this purpose; I still experienced rashes and topical burning, and yes, even when diluting 2-3 times more than the recommended dilution for the record. When I tried Young Living with the same purpose, I did not experience these same issues. I had actually stopped all topical and internal use for well over a year before attempting to try again with Young Living. I am still cautious and I still dilute, but I had even diluted another “qualifying” brand 5 times more than they recommended and still broke out in a severe rash that did not go away for two weeks. That has not happened in 5 months of use of Young Living.
So why was my first use of them so memorable and why can I use them topically and internally for the first time with no reactions?
First, I am trying to understand why exactly. It’s a science for sure. But one thing I learned that is in the definite benefit and perhaps the real reason why is the 5 Step Seed to Seal process.
What this means is that Young Living starts with the seeds – not with the organic farming. I think this is important to understand because the seeds you use are the basis of a pure oil.
Then of course the strict oversight of the farming of their plants for the oils by Young Living, including having owned the land and property to be able to actually have that strict oversight.
