Making your own homemade versions of store-bought products is a frugal, healthier, fun and rewarding way to save a ton of money on groceries and Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix recipe is no exception!
It is one of the creamiest, tastiest, ranchiest mixes to use for, yes, dressing, but also as a coating for veggies (ranch potatoes and ranch hash browns are awesome just to mention a few!) It is great on chicken, either as a coating on the actual chicken, or a sauce and many other yummy uses!
Anything you would use ranch or dry ranch mix for – you can use this homemade version instead!
Recipe for Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix (I double or triple this recipe and store in a sealed glass jar)
- 1/3 cup powdered milk
- 2 TBSP of Parsley or Summer Savory
- 1 tsp of dill weed
- 1 tsp of celery seed
- 1.5 tsp of garlic powder
- 1 tsp of onion powder
- 2 TBSP of dried onion flakes
- 1 tsp of pepper or 1.5 tsp lemon pepper (lemon pepper adds a nice subtle tang)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- *optional – 2 tsp of dried chives or dried green onions
Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and store in a glass jar or other air tight container to use when you need it!
Then you can use this mix for any recipes calling for dry ranch mix, or try it coated on potatoes or other veggies or chicken! All of this is fantastically yummy!
How to prepare actual ranch dressing from this mix
- 1/3 cup Mayo or Greek Yogurt (for a healthier version)
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 TBSP of the above seasoning
- *for a buttermilk like version, also add 1 tsp of white distilled vinegar
Whisk all of the ingredients together. For a thicker consistency, add a little more mayo until you reach the thickness you want. Likewise, if you want it thinner, just add a little more milk and mix. The BEST method for mixing this by hand is if you have a blender bottle or a bottle/jar with a tightly sealed lid that you can vigorously shake! You can store it in the fridge prepared for several days. Serve how you normally would or how you plan to serve it!
Salad is a classic of course!
A fantastic, tasty, creamy way to enjoy your next green salad! Yummo!

Do you mean 1/3 CUP?
“one-third (1/3) Mayo or Greek Yogurt (for a healthier version)”

Hi Angela – yes, that is what I meant. 🙂 Sorry about that. It’s also fixed now. Thank you for mentioning it so I could fix it! Have a great day!

I want to create a ranch mix using powdered milk from my food storage. I want to be able to just add water and mayo. What do you think.
I want to try your recipe with maybe double the powdered milk. I’m curious if you’ve ever tried anything g like that. Thanks!
Cassie
Hi Aubrey – I have actually done that exact thing with the exact recipe above and it still tastes great. The milk just makes it super creamy, but sometimes we just like a less creamy ranch flavor and it works fine. It is probably closer to a lot of salad bar restaurant ranches with just the water and the mayo! Hopefully that helps. 🙂

maybe a silly question and I haven’t had a chance to go through all of the comments. But if you’re adding it to sour cream or yogurt, or using milk/buttermilk, why do you need the powdered in the dry mix?
