It is the start of a brand new Friday. With Friday also comes Fun Fabulous Friday here on The Thrifty Couple.
For those of you that have not yet participated – how does Fun Fabulous Friday work? Well, at the end of today one of our readers will win a $10 Amazon gift card. You will need to enter to have a chance to win! You can get two possible entries each today.
Each week, we have had a fun topic for everyone to leave their quick comment/insight on. It has been so much fun to read the awesome tips and comments that you all have.
This week is going to be called – Let’s Get Organized. This is in lieu of us working on and completing the big organizational project over here at our house to get ready for a neighborhood garage sale. We literally went through the whole basement tonight and collected quite a bit of junk treasures to sell. With us preparing for this garage sale, we have also committed ourselves to being more organized and simple. So, we want to hear any tip that you have on how you get, become and/or stay organized. As our family grows and time is of the essence even more, this is one place that we are trying to learn more and more!
You all are so brilliant and we love these Friday tips each week!
Here are the two ways to enter. Make sure to leave a comment for each one as each one is a separate entry.
- This is the “mandatory” entry. We love hearing from each of you and your tips. So, this week we want to know your tips on how you get, become and/or stay organized.
- For your next entry, leave a second comment if you are a “liker” of The Thrifty Couple on Facebook. Its not too late if you’re not a liker yet, just go to our page and click ‘Like’. We also post extra deals and information on Facebook for our readers that you will not find on the site here.
We will share some of our tips when we make the announcement of the winner tomorrow!
This giveaway is for TODAY – Friday, September 10th ONLY! It ends at 11:59 MDT tonight! The winner will be announced on Saturday…. afternoon (garage sale ends at lunch!)!

I try and stay on top of everything that comes in..and then I put it into baskets that I have labeled so that when I get a chance to get everything put away, I can do it all at once.

Everything needs to have a home and if you find that something is never in its home then find it a new home. Help young kids know where homes are by using picture labels that you can either draw yourself or print off little clip art ones from your computer.

We love to have labeled containers in our garage. I have them for each holiday I decorate for, clothes the kids have outgrown for garage sale, and for each child that I want to keep precious mementos…we cant keep all of their papers but we try to keep a few every year!!! Now when I want to get my Fall stuff out to decorate I know exactly where it is!!

I keep a piece of paper and pen on the kitchen counter. Any time I think of something I have to do or buy, I write it on that paper so I won’t forget. My husband has even learned to add to the list when he needs something I missed.

I use totes and bins
Things I access a lot I use the totes that are stackable and accessible from the front so I can just reach in and grab what I need
Items that are seasonal I use Totes with lids and label them and put them in the garage out of the way til we need them

I keep an empty diaper box in the corner of my daughter’s closet. As she outgrows things I toss them in the box…when the box is full I label it with what items are in there and then put it in the attic. Then I put another empty one in its place. It has made packing away her stuff easy and makes for easy access later when giving away or selling the stuff because everything is labeled.

We live in NYC, so organizing is important to us. Having simple, uncluttered living space is really important to me, so I am always looking for things to get rid of, which is funny, because before we moved here, there were so many things I just HAD to bring–now, they take up precious space and I want them out! I think uncluttered living makes cleaning easier on me and the kids. It’s a process we’re still working hard at. 🙂

To get organized, it’s important to go through your closets and drawers every year and donate. When traveling, we organize by selecting items that can be worn twice and versatile options that are more casual.

As I am leaving a room, I try to pick one thing up that belongs in the room I am going through or to. This way I am picking up while just walking through the house.

Once a while, I go thru each room, one at a time. I throw away things if I haven’t touch for over a year. I just cleaned out a bunch of papers from my bookshelf and I can’t believe I’m still keeping my homework from college days. Those need to be out of the door like LONG TIME AGO. I just started to become more organized.

ORgaNiZed – What’s that! This is one area I need to work on! Thanks for all the tips, hopefully one will help. I do use boxes and totes for holiday decorations. My husband put a shelf system along the roof of the garage so that everything is out of the way til the next year.

In terms of organization, you have to find a system that is practical and easy, otherwise you will never stick with it.

The most important thing here is to stay relaxed about the lists/schedules/routines. If something isn’t working for us, it’s okay to step back and start over! After that, it’s all about storage bins with lids that are carefully labeled.

ORGANIZE??? LOL WHATS THAT?! I have a 6 year old and a 2 year old that thinknothing should ever be clean and organized! lol But i try my hardest to get rid of stuff lying around the house by either having a garage sale or selling it on craigslist or something. The way i look at it is, If i havent used it in a long time or forgot that i even had it in the first place than i dont need it! The extra money deffinitly helps too!
lisa
I love you guys on facebook! you have saved me so much money! TY!

I have a bunch of clear shoebox-size storage boxes. I keep like items in these, IE: first aid kit, stocked-up deodorant/razors, stocked up toothbrushes/toothpaste, etc.
These stack easily in my closet and keep everything organized without tipping everything over.

I try to go through everything in my house at least once a year and get rid of everything we’re not using.

I completely de-cluttered my kids drawers and closets. They simply had too many clothes. They each have about 10 outfits which makes laundry so much easier. My oldest is in first grade, so I sorted her clothes into outfits, so she is always matching. She has a pile of outfits for school and a pile of play clothes for weekends/holidays. I too have a diaper box in the closet and when any of my kids grow out of something, it goes in the box to give away. I do one load of laundry every day to keep mount washmore under control. Occasionally I do two loads, but the second will be sheets or towels, something that is quick to fold and put away.
Also, the kids and I both have our own cleaning routines. I have the routines in a sheet protector and use a dry erase marker to mark off the chores each day. I also have a weekly list of things to do. Not everything on the lists get done. But they will be on the same list tomorrow or next week and I will get to them!

I’m not the most organized person, but one thing that helps me with my young children…keep a box in their closet to throw in those clothes that are too small for them as you notice (usually while putting away their clothes after washing). After the box gets full all you have to do is mark with the age, close it and get it to the garage!

I put items away as soon as they come in the house that way they don’t pile up on me.

Boxes. Lots of boxes. If there is a place (a box) for something, it’s sure easier to put it away.

We have a storage unit. Anything that is not being used goes into storage. We also keep empty diaper boxes and as our boys outgrow toys and clothes we box them up and give them away. We also do the same for our clothes.

We donate our recycle items and so to keep it organized we have four bins – plastic, paper, glass, and cans. Once a week we take the bins to the recycle place when we do our weekly shopping. Good luck with your garage sale!
