Buy only what is absolutely necessary now – then really stock up when everything goes on clearance and stores don’t have the room to stock it all.

I am a homeschooler so I wait until everyone has gone back to school and then when all the supplies go on clearance is when I buy our new supplies for the year.

My thrifty tip is to catch the sales, then price match at stores where you can stack the coupons! I rarely shop at Walmart anymore for this very reason, it’s cheaper at other places! I’m a follower on facebook too!

My thriftiest back-to-school tip is to buy supplies when you see them in September…when they are marked off a lot! Then, you can store them for the next year!
Emily
I am a FB “liker.” Thank you!

I only buy school supplies on sale to stock up the classrooms for my 2 gradeschoolers (i.e. 20 cent crayons & glue). The sale items are usually cheaper than the clearance b/c it goes quick in my stores.
Elizabeth Walker
My kids are sort of too young for school yet, but I started out buying cards and that kind of stuff for them to exchange at school last year after the holidays/events to get them on clearance! I am also making more of their clothing using cheap material!

My best back to school savings tip is…making my kids lunches!!! I know it’s not anything new but it is very inexpensive since I coupon verses buying their lunch.
Sarah
Stack coupons and sales with Target coupons. Got some amazing deals this past week. Got a bunch of pens, sticky notes and tape for next to nothing!
Sarah
Love you on facebook! Thanks for everything!!

I have a “lunch” shelf organized so the kids can pick their lunches quickly and decide for themselves what they feel like eating that day. It’s fun to watch them choose.

I homeschool my 7 yr old & 4 yr old. One thing we use a lot of is folders….for lapbooks & unit studies as well keeping papers in. I have found Walgreens back to school sales have been by far the best. I have gotten all our pens and mechanical pencils for free! Folders for 9 cents each! And even notebooks & highliters for next to nothing!

My kids aren’t in school yet, but I can see us taking our own lunches when they do go. Just became a FB liker today!

Keep a summer schedule because it’s easier to transition BTS.

I always buy book bags at Wal-mart when they are marked down on clearance to $3. That way if the girl’s bookbags get tore or real dirty we always haved an extra one laying around! Last year we found some for $1!
Robin
My tip is to start early and shop around. I had great luck hitting sales at various stores, paying .25 for a box of crayons, .10 for glue, etc., but it takes patience and the willingness to hit different stores. I saved a huge amount over last year when I bought everything at Wal-Mart. We’ve also “recycled” school supplies. Every year my kids come home with extra pencils, erasers, etc. that they didn’t use. They go back to school the next year.

I like your website.
We are fortunate that at our school we don’t have to buy supplies as they are included in our lovely school taxes… We do however have to donate kleenex which I have stocked up on with sales and coupons…
I do hit the sales with coupons and stock up. The crayons and things are awesome gifts for party bags. I like to stock up on the goody bags to hand out in class after the season on the clearance racks too.
Clothes… CLEARANCE rack… buy ahead sizes. Our local Goodwill occasionally runs sales… like kids clothes 3 for 99 cents… so I am filling my totes with bigger sizes. I have two girls…surely one of them will end up using them!
Best wishes!
Nancy
I love your website. I also love saving money. I shop only sale items, and wait for coupons if I don’t really need the item.

The thrifty tip for back to school is just like for Christmas—have an account (or jar or envelope) that you contribute to all year long, for a set amount every month. By the time these events arrive, you have cash to use so you can spend it for the best sales (saving once) with no credit card interest (saving twice).
patricia
I use the food that I buy for very little for their lunch.
Meghan
My tip is to stock up on food for lunches and freeze as much as you can!

As a teacher, I look for school supplies that are inexpensive and in large packages. I always look at the Walgreen’s Ads because they have new deals each week like 10 packs of .19 pencils. These are great to keep in my classroom for students who forget their own stuff throughout the year. I also love following you on Facebook!

My thriftiest tip: I buy my kids school clothes at consignment shop, most of them are pretty much do and sooo cheap. They are new to my kids, they don’t really care. My friend and i also have a clothing swap with our children’s clothing!

Buy your back to school clothes at the end of the season of the previous year. I always buy a year ahead when everything is on clearance.
