I have a small notebook i carry with me all year around with useful info in it. I have the bts supply list from my schools website for the next several grades in it (I have 4 kids). when i see an item at rock bottom pricing (24 PK crayola crayons for 10cents) I buy enough for all the boys for the next few years. Or if I need a filler item to make my drug store deals work I have some useful ones on my list instead of buying a candy bar.

I dont have school age kids, but I did find an incredible sale at Walgreens last week and bought a ton of supplies to give to friends with school age kids.

My back to school idea is to receive Kohl’s emails because they will send you coupons that count for everything…even clearance clothes…which we did for our kids and saved $90 only spent $40 to get 2 kids ready for back to school!!!

I don’t have my own kids in school yet, but I would suggest looking at kids resale shops if your kids have to wear uniforms. Here in San Antonio, there are a few that are full of them.

I stock up on the $10 of $20 coupons at kohls for school clothes!

I always buy extra.
I assess backpacks – the older the kids get sometimes they don’t need a new one and if we talk them through needs vs. wants…that works really well.
Thanks.

Every summer I watch for those Staples ads, and stock up on those freebies with rebates. As soon as I get home, I enter my rebates on line, takes about 3 minutes. So far, I have gotten the following items free: Schoolbag, 4 packs highlighters, notesbooks, folders, binders, loose paper, pens, pencils, tape, glue, and a 2gm thumb drive for $1!

Well, this is will be my first year having a school-aged child, so I don’t have much experience, but I would have to say shopping the end of season clearance for next years clothes has really helped us! I got most of his school clothes for this year at the end of last year and it has helped the finances for this month!!

I stock up year round on school supplies, so I rarely have to pay full price for anything.

My oldest is only in preschool, and we don’t have to have supplies, uniform, etc., but I imagine packing a lunch instead of hot lunch most of the time will save a lot of money when he is in school the whole day.

Clearance is my idea of a good buy on school supplies. Well, it was–until I learned about couponing + sale prices.

I like to stock up on teacher gifts at the end of summer sale from Yankee Candle and Starbucks mug clearances. Far cheaper for a holiday “thank you” that they really like.

Grow old enough that you no longer have kids in school so you can take advantage of tax free weekends for your own stuff.

Well, I’m a teacher, so I’ll go at it from that angle. In my opinion, back to school shopping is not limited to August/September. Whenever I can get a crazy deal on something, I buy hoards. It’s important to note that things you know you’ll use (notebook paper) can be bought in large quantities. I had notebook paper all through college thanks to my own thrifty mom– that was years ago, so it’s finally been used (though I think we donated some to others as well).

My thrifty school supply shopping tip…Watch sales and price-match at stores that will allow it.
Right now my husband is in school for his MAT but doesn’t need much supply-wise as most of his schoolwork is computer based, but I’ve still been buying stuff when it is nearly free (even better if it is free!) because he’ll need pens, paper, etc in his classroom! Doesn’t hurt me any to store it for awhile if it was free!

To save money on school supplies, don’t wait until the end of summer to do your shopping. Watch for deals and coupons throughout the year and stock up when the prices are low. For back to school clothing, thrift shopping and yard sales can be fun and a great way to score awesome deals!
Tina Wuthnow
My thrifty back to school tip is at the end of the school year we put away the scissors, calculators and things that are easily reusable. Then in August we pull out that basket and know where everything is. Of course there is nothing better than a new box of crayons and markers every August.

My best tip is buying early and when it’s on sale. Lately there have been some great deals on back to school supplies, and while we probably don’t need 15 packs of highlighters right this second, at $0.19 per pack of 4 at Walgreens a few weeks ago you can’t go wrong, and we’re stocked up for the year, if not longer!

My thrifty tip is to look everywhere for school supplies. The grocery store you get your milk from might have the folders you need for less than Walmart!

My son is not in school yet, but we usually buy clothes out of season when they are on sale. So we buy his winter clothes for the following winter in spring, etc.
