Yikes!! I’m really bad when it comes to holiday food. I think my best advice is to just remember moderation. I think it is okay to splurge a little bit, don’t go overboard.

The one tip that I could give is to only make the amount of food that is going to be eatin. My problem is the left overs, you can keep going back for more and more and more…limit that amount and kinds of food that is made or brought!

Make it yourself! You have the control of what goes into your cooking. Instead of oil in the baked good (cookies, cake…) use applesauce. This helps lower the fat and lower the sugar you have to add to it.
Amanda
I like to keep my thoughts and hands busy by looking for deals and entering contests. Also if you don’t buy it you can’t eat it. 🙂

My tip to a little healthier eating… Always keep a full glass of water next to you. If you take a bite of something also take a couple good drinks of water. That way your belly will feel fuller quicker!!
Trisha Balmer
Tip #1 – drink a glass of water before you sit down to eat or before you go to someone else’s to eat. This will help fill up your stomach so you get full faster. Tip #2 – If the dinner is at your house, give away the leftovers! Tip #3 – When going to someone else’s for dinner take a dish that is low in fat and calories so that at least one thing on the buffet will be healthier for you. Tip #4 – Always sit down to eat, no standing around snacking all night. You eat less when sitting down because you feel the pressure of a full stomach faster.

When you can’t help baking your favorite treat, remember to have friends over to share it – that way you don’t end up eating all of it yourself. Also, don’t get trapped into thinking you have to make all the traditional side dishes – just make what you and your family really enjoy!

Try drinking a glass of water, before eating.

My best tip is portion control!

I don’t have much advice for avoiding holiday calories. We don’t really do any holiday parties so we really only eat what we make.
Becky
Healthy hint… “No, thank you — it smells great, but I’m really full.” Don’t let anyone push you into eating more than food when you are satisfied. I’m guilty as I hate leftovers ‘one serving or less’ leftovers.

I’m so bad about overdoing it on the holidays. I try to be reasonable and eat until I am less than full all of the time except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. It works okay for me.
Kate
Tip 1– Hit the veggie tray or fruit tray before eating anything else. Studies have shown that if you fill up on the good stuff, it’s easier to…
Tip 2– control portion sizes. If you want the creamy, ooey, gooey yummy stuff, don’t deny yourself! Have a small slice of the pie, or have a tablespoon of the dip. Denying yourself often just makes you feel bad and ultimately leads to overeating when you do finally indulge.
But my biggest “tip” isn’t so much of a tip, but rather a mindset change:
Tip 3– Try to think about what you are adding to your diet rather than taking away. Carrots still have all the wonderful goodness of veggies, even when they’re dipped in ranch dressing! What I mean by that is that if you come at your eating habits from the angle of “I’m doing XYZ (eating veggies, eating small portions, eating whole grains) because it’s good for me” rather than “I’m NOT doing XYZ (eating too much, eating fatty foods, eating sugar, etc.) because it’s bad for me.” you tend to just feel more satisfied as a whole. It’s focusing on the positive instead of the negative, on what you’re allowing yourself instead of what you’re denying yourself.
That’s how I make it through the holidays!
Ruth
My tip through the holidays is to make the food at home as healthful as possible: plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Then, when high-calorie holiday events are happening, choose a couple favorite items and savor them slowly. Just making holiday treats to “have around the house” is a sure diet-killer!

Tip #1 For every alcohol drink you have drink a bottle of water. Alcohol has a lot of calories! Tip #2 Eat the fruit and veggies before you eat anything else on the buffet. Tip #3 Instead of using a big plate at the buffet grab a dessert plate. Helps control your portion size.
Anna
Avoid high calorie alcohol drinks. Research low calorie drinks, example gin with diet tonic instead of egg nog. And drink lots of water.

I try to choose one treat that I love and enjoy it and don’t eat the rest. For me I can’t eat just one bite, so I have to not eat at all.

Eat some healthy fruit/veggie snacks before you go to a party.

I like to bake.. a lot! If I bake a double (or triple) batch of something then I HAVE to give some away. I allow myself to have one or two cookies or cupcakes or whatever, then I immediately package them up and start delivering.

My best trick for making holiday sweets and avoiding the calories is to make things I don’t like but others do. For example, I don’t like coconut, so if I put even a little into something, I’ll avoid it. Works for buying Halloween candy, too. I don’t like Butterfinger (but hubby does), so I’ll get those for the neighborhood kids, and hubby can have the leftovers.
