I had this idea that just popped in my head a few days ago. It is nothing that is so innovative that it is earth shattering, but honestly, it was hugely helpful and thrifty for our family.
I personally really limit the sugar and sugar pops my kids get, but.this.is.all.they.want. in the heat of the summer! So, I have made just plain fruit and yogurt pops in a mold and then serve them up…. but this does take time and effort to blend the fruits, it’s GREAT, just not super fast and easy. I have also purchased 100% fruit bars when they are on sale, but with 5 kids….. that lasts about as long as a dollar at Costco.
So…. I was out of homemade and store bought pops. The kids were wanting a treat after backyard sprinkler play and I stood there staring that the yummy watermelon and thought to myself “HELLO Cassie – just make fun watermelon shapes and freeze them! Viola!”
And that is exactly what I did. It was a HUGE hit. They actually felt like they were getting a fun, juicy, sweet treat! It was great, thrifty, healthy, easy and kid-approved. I am totally doing this all summer!
There really isn’t many instructions, but I will share what I did!
- Cut the watermelon into circle slices about 1 inch thick, basically a plate sized watermelon with the rind.
- Then, using cookie cutter shapes of any kind and cut out as many shapes as you can from the watermelon.
- Then cut all of the excess watermelon and save as it is great to eat 🙂
- Once you have them cut, stick a popsicle stick or straw through the watermelon shape. You will get dozens of pops!
- Then lay them flat on a piece of wax paper and place in the freezer flat. You can also place the wax paper on a cookie sheet and then place in the freezer for more stability.
- Freeze for a couple of hours to overnight.
- Then transfer into a gallon ziploc and enjoy the frozen, natural treat when in need of a popsicle fix!
Fun and Natural Treats for All!
I just love simple food!
That’s it!
