Every year we make handmade ornaments for our family’s ornament exchange.  We make ornaments for our tree, plus for our extended family too! It’s a fun tradition!

Our favorite ornaments are the ones that show something memorable or growth wise made by our kids! And so this year, we made thumbprint reindeer ornament bulbs. They are so cute, fun and memorable!

It is so fun to see all of the kids’ ornaments together as there are 5 different thumbprint sizes.  We made these on mini bulbs and then we made one family one on a big plastic bulb that has the whole family (including mom and dad) on one ornament.  We also wrote the names and year under each thumbprint on each ornament.

These are really easy to make and dry really quickly!

Here’s how to make Thumbprint Reindeer Ornaments!

You will need:

  • Plastic or glass bulbs in any number of ornaments you plan to make.  We suggest the small ones for a single reindeer or large for multiple thumbprints.
  • Cotton balls
  • Brown acrylic paint
  • Red acrylic paint
  • Black Sharpie

To make:

  • First start by stuffing the ornaments with cotton to give the appearance of “snow” in the background.

  • Then pour a bit of brown paint onto a paper plate and dip the thumb in to cover in paint.  If there is excess paint – make a thumbprint on a piece of paper and then a second one on the ornament. You don’t want the paint thick and the actual print won’t appear if it is too thick.
  • Let this dry.
  • Once it is dry, make a red dot for the nose.
  • Then add two black dots for the eyes and draw antlers on with the Sharpie.  Feel free to write the name and year too!

  • Let this fully dry again and then hang up and enjoy for many years!

They really turned out so cute! I love these little thumbprints of my kids to cherish for years to come!
