Have you heard the news that Walmart plans to close around 154 stores across the country (and many more worldwide)? You can read the current articles as to why and the Walmart strategy for why. Honestly, for us we were quite perplexed as it seems to be coming out of left field. Of all of the corporations out there, we would have not guessed Walmart would be considering such changes. Most of the closures are within 10 miles of another Walmart.
We live between two Walmart Stores that are both a few miles from us, only being around six or so miles apart – with both hopping all of the time! So although we don’t have any in our state closing, it was still a little shocking. Ultimately, we are not broken-hearted about it as we would love to see smaller, local, family-run businesses not be taken over everywhere; we’re just surprised.
But the surprise was short-lived when reading the reason why. It’s not because they are hurting in whole, it’s because they are refocusing on bringing in more Supercenters as most of the closures are the smaller stores, Neighborhood Markets or express Walmart stores, which have not done as well or not as profitable as a Supercenter can be. So who knows, maybe this will be better for small businesses but overall, probably not. They probably do have some of the smartest strategists out there. They know what they are doing whether we like it or not!

Our local Walmart is one of those that is closing. We live in a small community in NC made up primarily of retirees. Walmart came in a couple of years ago and built their Express despite a lot of community opposition. At that time, we had a privately owned grocery and a pharmacy. This was convenient for the many in our community who no longer drive and need stores within walking or biking distance. Well, the pharmacy and the grocery both went out of business because of Walmart cutting prices on them. Now Walmart is leaving and our community will now have no grocery or pharmacy within 10 miles. We are not a happy place right now.
