We cannot wait to share a favorite Christmas craft with you this year! It is the BEST! I am a sentimental mommy and I love crafts and things with handprints. I have shared many crafts with my kids’ handprints, but this is a special one because the whole family helped with this one. That’s why we call it the Family Christmas Tree!
We actually use the baby’s footprints (one footprint if it is a toddler or older) for the tree trunk, then the family’s handprints from oldest to youngest. Then we used the baby’s hand for the star on top! Then thumbprint ornaments!
I am telling you, this is the #1 decoration in our home at Christmastime. Everyone LOVES it and comments on it!
But the even better part is that it is super affordable to recreate, but it may just be the most valuable decor item in your home this season. 🙂
What you need:
- Foam brushes (.10 – .25 each)
- Fabric Paint (.77-$1.29 each) in brown, green (we used pine tree green), yellow and colors for ornaments.
- Canvas of some kind. I love this burlap wrapped canvas that I got from Hobby Lobby. It is priced at $13.99, then I used my 40% off coupon = $8.39
- A nice washing area! It is messy. The only spot in my home that I would trust to do a project like this was in my kitchen with my Delta faucet with Touch2O Technology. You have to watch the video to see just how seamless this process was. I seriously love this faucet and so happy we made the upgrade when we remodeled. Life is much easier.
In the end – the cost of this project was around $10! That is very cheap for this type of family Christmas DIY project.
It is pretty easy to do, the hardest part is that it is not forgiving. So you really have to be precise with where the footprints and handprints go! We practiced before on newsprint so that the kids knew exactly what to do…except the baby. He still resisted. But hey, it’s still cute!
Watch the video to get an idea of how to make this project. It’s really a matter of painting the paint on the hands and feet and dipping the fingerprints in the paint and placing where you want!
The biggest tips are to just know exactly where you plan to place the prints, but as you can see, it is quite easy to do! The paint does dry fast, but you do want to wait between each set of colors to switch. Do the feet, wait for them to dry, then the hands and let them dry, then the star on top and you can do the ornaments while the star dries. But because it dries so quickly, this project was completed in less than 30 minutes! Also, this acrylic paint does wash off very easily, which makes it easier to use with kids.
That’s it! Now you have a memorable masterpiece to grace your walls during the holiday season!
What do you think about this idea? Is this something you would try? I am an obsessive handprint/footprint mom. I love their sweet little hands and feet. I’ve shared lots of ideas for crafts using handprints and footprints.
