Hello readers of The Thrifty Couple! I’m Krista from The Happy Housie and I am so excited to be here today sharing an easy DIY project for turning the inside of your pantry or cupboard doors into functional and practical chalkboards- using your own homemade chalkboard paint.
Thank you so much to Cassie and Alex for having me here today! As I said, I spend most of my bloggy time over at The Happy Housie. I called my blog this because I think of myself as a “housie”; someone whose hobby and passion is all kinds of house related stuff like decorating, crafting, organizing, making old things new again, and DIY projects… like this easy DIY Chalkboard Pantry Project that I am here to share with you today.
When we first looked at our house (before buying it) we quickly realized that the kitchen was the room that left the most to be desired. And while we haven’t managed a full kitchen renovation yet, we have made a few little changes that add to the function and aesthetics of the space. Like the inside of our pantry doors… before their chalkboard-ization they were in pretty rough shape…
In a compact floor plan such as ours you don’t want to waste any space- so the inside of the pantry doors screamed for a function. I decided to give them that function with some DIY Chalkboard Paint.
They quickly became the perfect spot to record our Weekly Menu plan…
I love how planning our meals out ahead of time ensures that we don’t waste anything- we can plan to make something one evening that can be used for lunches or recycled and reinvented into another dinner. Planning ahead is definitely key in our busy household as I work nearly full time as teacher in addition to being a busy Mom, wife, and running my blog.
They are also great for having a space to jot down any groceries that I need to remember to pick up that week.
That little quote at the bottom of the chalkboard reminds me of the importance of taking time to enjoy good meals together as a family.
Head on over to The Happy Housie to read more about how I whipped up my own Chalkboard Paint to use for this project- it was a big savings over the retail cost of buying a small can of pre-made Chalkboard Paint. A regular can of chalkboard paint would run you around $25-30 or more (where we live). To buy the supplies for this cost me $9 for the paint (a clearance sale) and $10 for the unsanded grout… but I now have materials for a multitude of additional chalkboard projects… more then I could possibly every chalkboard my way through.
Thank you again for having me here today, Cassie and Alex! My bloggy philosophy is that we are always creating and re-creating our homes in response to the needs of our families and our lives- they are always a work in progress. So I like to sign off with….
Thanks for reading. And remember, my housie friends, HOME isn’t built in a day. Enjoy the journey.

I was obsessed with my new bedroom design. I wanted every detail of the interior to be perfect. I paid special attention to the doors and chose fiberglass doors https://www.elegantentrydoors.ca/entry-fiberglass-doors/. My room is always humid and can get mold, so it was important to me that the door was made of a waterproof material that does not deteriorate. I feel like I made the perfect choice.
