Wow, this is a huge milestone for the food industry in the US. If you have been reading our site long, you will know that we try to be as natural and even organic when and where our budget allows. Last January, we shared how our family is taking 2013 to the next level with a complete jump into natural and organic.
Well, Cheerios was one of our favorite cereals, but we haven’t had it for the past year. If I were to pick any non-organic cereal, it would still be Cheerios as I think it is one of the best non-organic cereals out there. But the news that just broke about Cheerios going GMO-free is HUGE!
Now please note a few things:
- They are not in stores yet. GM started producing this new batch of non-GMO Cheerios a few weeks ago and will hit shelves soon.
- You will know that they are in your store when the label on the box says, “”Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients.”
- This is ONLY FOR ORIGINAL Cheerios. The other version of Cheerios are still made the same ol’ way and probably will be. There doesn’t seem to be much talk about changing the ingredients in the other varieties at this point. Many articles point out the fact that this was a costly change and GM sees changing other GM cereals and Cheerios varieties as nearly impossible at this point. But, this is the one we love, the one commonly given as finger food snacks for babies/toddlers and so it’s great news in our book none-the-less.
One thing that we do not know yet is if the price of the original yellow box Cheerios will increase. And if it does, how much? Either way, we are personally willing to pay a bit more for this option as we have been getting organic cereals this past year anyway, which aren’t cheap. Needless to say, we rarely have cereal for breakfast or snacks. This may make it more possible!
You can see the report on several national news stations:
- Wall Street Journal online
- ABC News
- CNN Money
- CBS News
- USA Today
- Finally the GMO site itself also reported this news
Now another quick tip on getting Cheerios for a great price. If GM does happen to increase the price of Cheerios, the good news is that the GM rock bottom sale occurs about every 6-8 weeks. More often than any other company. They also provide loads of coupons in newspapers and online and so even if you can’t get the same price, we are confident that you can get a good price and potentially better than many other organic options that are out there.
To find those coupons when you are ready to buy it, just check our Coupon Database HERE and search Cheerios and see what is available.
In addition, you can almost always find a printable Cheerios coupon on the coupon print site HERE.
What do you think of this? Are you happy to see this change and are more likely to buy Cheerios now?
