Earlier this week, we shared our natural (no preservatives, nitrate-free, msg-free) sausage that is cheap and how you can get 26 breakfasts worth for $19!

Well, we have shared many breakfast recipes on our breakfast page, many of which that use the crumbled cooked sausage! Well, we do have many other breakfast recipes that end up being very cheap and hearty to fill the tummies of the 7 of us! After discussions on our Facebook page about very cheap breakfasts to use the sausage in, we decided we should share more of our breakfasts with you too!

This next one is a favorite in our house! In fact, I made this for breakfast yesterday and our 8-year old came in the kitchen and said “YAY, this is my FAVORITE! Thank you Mommy!”
It is called Rice and Gravy. It is actually just like biscuits and gravy, but uses rice as an alternative to biscuits!
Once you have the sausage cooked and the SOS mix made, then you can throw this breakfast together very quickly! In fact, we also have a rice cooker which I feel is a MUST for any frugal kitchen!
We buy long-grain brown rice in bulk for around $28ish per 50lb. bag. This is a super healthy option, but cooking it on the stove-top does take an hour AND…unless you stay there and keep stirring, it sticks to the bottom of the pan easily!
I bought the Aroma 20-cup rice cooker a couple of years ago and it is the #1 appliance in my kitchen! I use it about 5 times per week for breakfast, lunch or dinner! I literally add equal parts rice and equal parts water and push a button! I HIGHLY recommend this particular one as it is affordable and multi-function as it triples as a steamer and slow cooker (crockpot) as well! I also cook quinoa and beans in there too. You can see all of the information on my favorite rice cooker on Amazon HERE!

So the 3 main things needed are the sausage, SOS mix for the gravy and the rice. I just shared how to quickly and very frugally have all of this on hand and ready to go for a super yummy, hearty, healthy and gluten-free breakfast!
Here’s how to make it:
- Cook your rice
- While your rice is cooking, you will want to make your gravy. The BEST thing to do is to create SOS mix. We have talked about this miracle mix over-and-over again. It is really a kitchen miracle! This base will make cheese sauces, gravies and cream soups very quickly and slickly (is that a word! :)). Basically, you can make this dry mix and replaced many, many canned goods! The white gravy recipe is on the SOS page HERE.
- Once you make your white gravy, you want to add the sausage crumbles and stir until warmed and well mixed!
- Then just “scoop” your rice onto a plate and ladle gravy over the top and enjoy!
*Please note: to make it gluten-free, when you make your roux for your gravy, you will want to use gluten-free flour, rice flour, sorghum flour or a combination of any of these. It is a very quick and simple fix to make the whole recipe gluten-free!
Here’s a printable recipe for you to put into your home binder! AND details on the Home Binder with FREE downloads are HERE.
