This morning Savings.com has posted their Savings Pledge – a unique way in which they are attempting to help families become more financially savvy. We we were asked as 2011 Deal Pros if we would partner with them in sharing this message. We wanted to share this with you and encourage you to participate – you just need to check out their Savings Pledge on Facebook and pledge how much you plan to save each week. But before you do, let us share with you what each part of this pledge represents to us.
I pledge to always be smart, never cheap – We truly believe in spending wisely. Our goal has been to teach you the tools for doing so. Instead of going to the store and buying generic products, we try to show you how to use coupons and combine them with an amazing deal to buy a better product. Yes, there are times that “cheap” is “smart”, but the goal is to give you the ability to smartly determine how to make your dollars stretch for the best product you can buy.
I pledge to buy better – This fits with our goals we have been working towards this in our own lives. For example, we have been trying to cut back on the sheer number of toys in our kids’ arsenal – with the goal to buy higher quality toys (such as Melissa & Doug) that will promote brain development and imagination instead of buying a lot of things cheaply that will later be discarded.
I pledge to have fun, be curious – Remember that becoming financially fit is a fun journey. Really, it is! It can be fun as a family to find out how to creatively make your next vacation a stay-cation. It can be fun to get your kids to work with you before and during the shopping trip as you plan to meet your budget. It is fun to find creative date ideas for you and your spouse! Have fun with it and don’t forget that saving money can be enjoyable as you seek to meet your goals.
I pledge to spend fearlessly – Read the small print on this one. Yes, we plan to do our research. No, we don’t plan to splurge – unless you mean enjoying some great dates, vacations, and products that we bought for less! What we find wise in this pledge is that we can purchase without fear of the cashier stating our card was declined. Yes, we’ve been there – the fear and doubt while waiting to see if this transaction would go through. But we plan to spend fearlessly now because we live on a budget, we know our debit card will be approved (because this purchase is already part of our itemized spending plan) and we have no fear in our purchases.
I pledge to pass along the savings – One of the amazing things we love about saving is the ability to have more to give and can give more because we can purchase more items for less! We love that savings can equate to giving to food banks, shelters and the pregnancy centers as well as giving in terms of money to churches and charities. We will also be soon announcing the charity of choice that we plan to support from a portion of the funds generated on our site. We also want to instill the principle of charity and giving even more so to our children in this coming year!
I pledge to love myself, ignore the Jonses – Ok, we would really like to name this to “I pledge to make the best decisions for my family” but we do love the small print. Yes, we agree – resist those trends and purchase what is best for your family. Make sure your family knows what you need and make sure to ignore those commercials. 🙂 Each family is going to be different and at the end of the day only you can decide what items are worth fitting into your budget and what items need to stay out.
We are pledging to share with you how we can all continue to improve our budgets, finances, futures, family and our lives by being smarter with our financial and money saving decisions! We along with Savings.com and fellow Deal Pros want to help you all save $1 billion.
Head to our little home on Facebook and simply make your “Savings Pledge” by clicking on the saving pledge tab on the left! Join the fun!
