Thrifty Al was up early this morning to pick-up our next basket of produce! As usual, we grab the organic basket of produce for $25 which includes 50% veggies and 50% fruit. It is also a surprise – an most often, a wonderful surprise to see what we will be getting each time we order these baskets. We use Bountiful Baskets which is a produce co-op in many of the western United States.
Here’s the breakdown of what was in our basket:
- 1 head Organic Romaine Lettuce
- 1 head Organic Cauliflower
- 2/3rds bag of Organic Black Grapes
- 3 Organic on-the-vine tomatoes
- 1 1-lb. Organic Strawberries
- 6 Organic Bananas
- 1 Organic Fennel
- 12 Organic Plums
- 1 Organic Cantaloupe
- 6 Organic Ears of Corn
- 1 3lb. bag Organic Yellow Onions
We have found this to be a wonderful option to be able to get our organic produce for cheap! We love it!
There are many produce co-ops and grocery co op groups and it’s various forms across the nation that you can join and be a part of. A good place to start looking is at a the site localharvest.org (which id going to help you get organic local food) or coopdirectory.org (I am not sure how updated this site is as our area’s listings were old and many not listed, but at least worth a shot!) or search produce co-op your state under google and see what listings come up. Also, Money Saving Mom posted an article on how to start your own produce co-op, especially if you could not find one in your area.
