You may have seen the dozens of news articles over the past couple of years regarding the bee population – or rather the decline of the bee population. Bees are so super important to our food supply.
First, the decline of the bee population is a very high alarming number – “The total number of managed honeybee colonies has gone from 5 million in the 1940s to only 2.5 million today. Winter 2012/2013 saw total losses of managed honeybee colonies at 31.1 percent, a figure higher than average for the last six years,” according to MNN network.
They don’t know why bees are disappearing yet, but we can help by creating bee friendly environments. God created these little guys for a purpose and so we personally want to do our best to be good stewards and help them.
Why is this important to do?
Well, 1/3 of our varieties of food will disappear without the pollinating efforts of bees! This would include the disappearance of:
- Apples
- Onions
- Avocados
- Carrots
- Mangos
- Lemons
- Limes
- Honeydew
- Cantaloupe
- Zucchini
- Summer squash
- Eggplant
- Cucumbers
- Celery
- Green onions
- Cauliflower
- Leeks
- Bok choy
- Kale
- Broccoli
- Broccoli rabe
- Mustard greens
We love everything on this list and would be so sad to see these things disappear! Here’s a picture to illustrate the point from Whole Foods Market:
Honestly, bees frighten me and I don’t want to be around them. But I don’t want to lose certain healthy foods even more! In fact, our desire for raw honey and produce has gotten so strong, that we have been talking about “how can we have a backyard urban bee farm?” I actually can’t believe I am at that point!
But, even if you don’t go that far, there are some simple things one can do to help save the bees!

Hi there! I’d like permission to use your “6 Ways To Help Bees” and “Make A Bee Hotel” graphic at our Birds & Bees Demonstration tent at the Coquitlam Farmers Market this weekend. We are a non-profit market, and we are passionate about not only providing local food choices, but teaching our customers how to care for the beasts who help them grow great food.
Please advise if I can use these 2 graphics as part of a display – the 6 ways one will be in a display on the table, and the Bee Hotel graphic will be handed out to families looking for craft ideas they can use in their own yards
thank you!
