Want to be able to practice taking photos for longer hours? Wish your camera’s battery could last longer? We have compiled five tips that can help you extend the battery life of your digital camera throughout the day and for the long haul.
If you want to learn more about saving battery life for smartphone cameras, check out the article on Adorama Learning Center that discusses ways to extend the battery life of the iPhone so that it can be maximized for photography purposes.
Here are the ways you can maximize your digital camera’s battery life:
Use the flash sparingly.
One of the biggest things that drains power out of your battery is shooting with flash. Shoot in natural light as much as possible. Use the flash only in low-light conditions or when natural light is not enough to achieve your desired effect for the photo. For more information on when to use flash, check out professional wedding and portrait photographer Lola Elise’s comprehensive guide. Lastly, make sure that your camera’s flash isn’t left on accidentally, as this can eat up your camera’s battery, too.
Use the lowest preview time setting possible.
Typically, a digital camera’s LCD preview time is set to 5 seconds by default. This setting is great for doing a quick check if you’ve gotten your shots right. Despite this quick preview time, having the LCD turned on for that long can already use up so much power. To keep this from happening, set it to the lowest preview time possible like a second or two.
Go through your previous shots only when necessary.
Checking if your photo has the right exposure and balance of elements in its frame is essential if you want to take quality photos like a pro. However, checking the shots in your camera repeatedly just to pass time can easily drain your battery. To conserve power, just check your shots for any errors before leaving a certain location.
Turn on the power-saving mode.
Many cameras come with a power-saving mode that adjusts settings like LCD brightness to a minimum, enabling you to maximize the battery up to the last bar. Depending on your model, this mode may also turn off your camera automatically after a few seconds of inactivity.
Always keep a spare battery with you.
Never make the mistake of waiting for your battery to be completely drained before charging it. To avoid this, invest in a spare battery that you can switch out with the other one when the latter’s charge is low. This way, your camera’s battery won’t get abused from all that charging and shooting. This also minimizes the risk of your battery not charging properly or worse—getting discharged.
Taking more photos wherever you go will no longer be a problem when you follow these tips to extend the battery life of your camera and save money on battery replacement costs.
