We are on the final count as we start day #24’s task! Today’s task should be pretty easy for most, in fact, I actually had my daughters really do one of them.
Day #24 Challenge – Organize Surfaces in the Kids’ Rooms or the Extra/Guest Rooms
This is going to be the final task in these rooms to make, feel and look organized. Even if all you had time for was organizing the surfaces, your home would have a dramatic new look and feel. Now the other tasks are awesome for the actual functioning of your home, but starting someone and getting something done is what is important.
You may be asking about toys. We are going to be dealing with this in a separate task. Our kids do not have many toys in their room. Most are in the family room. But this isn’t the case for everyone, so don’t worry about the toys right now as we will do this soon.
The boy’s room was very simple. Again, they have a flat, cloth toy bin that slides under their bed (from IKEA) and then lots of books. They have a book bin behind the bed and I organized. Then the remaining surfaces were the tops of the dresser (I took care of the tall one when we did the closets) and so it was pretty easy and quick. There really wasn’t a lot to do.

Now in the girls’ room, they tend to get pretty messy with their paper dolls, sewing stuff and a dozen other crafts/activities that 9 and 10 year old girls love (and that weird in between toys and big kid stuff stage)! So I directed them to organize and clean it up! My 9-year old is a born organizer and the habits of her 10-year old sister drive her crazy. Her bed is always nice and organized, but the older one’s is not (see picture below). So she loved this task as the 10-year old was forced to get it organized and it wasn’t just her younger sister nagging her. Truthfully, her younger sister is not that much younger – these two are Irish Twins (do you know what that means?).
They cleaned out their paper dolls and the surfaces where they store their sewing stuff, other writing materials, etc. It is really amazing what a 9 and 10 year old girl can collect and keep! It was actually quite a project. I helped them here and there, but I just let them do it. I gave them a laundry basket with a garbage bag and told them to “fill it up.” Well, now the task is completed their surfaces are no longer cluttered, they can actually see what they have, and it is just so much nicer and functional with just a bit of rearranging and reorganizing.
I snapped a picture of the most obvious surface in their room. She actually had cleaned this already a little before I snapped the picture, but it was pretty messy.

And we were laughing about the piggy bank’s position in both photos. I didn’t even notice until I wrote this post! 🙂
