We were given a large box of green apples. I have no clue what variety they were. When I asked my 3 daughters what we should do with them, they all said APPLE SAUCE!
My daughters, ages 15, 13, and 13 (twins), and I love to cook and can together. Whether it is jam, salsa, corn, spaghetti sauce, or APPLE SAUCE. It is something we enjoy. And, really, with 4 of us, we have it down to a very simple science.
So here is our SUPER EASY METHOD OF MAKING HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE…
Steps 1 and 2 are pretty simple. Wash, core and slice the apples. That was 1 job.
The second step was even simpler. Just heat up the apple slices in the microwave. They will make your kitchen smell like apple pie. That is a nice side effect. Heating them up will soften them and they may discolor a bit. After they are heated, about 6 minutes depending on the microwave, we put them in our food mill.
My food mill is very simple. It has a hand crank and is dishwasher safe. This one is very similar and is less than $25 on Amazon. Mine was about this price too.
I ladle the hot apples into the stainless steel food mill while another daughter turns the handle. When her arm gets tired we hand it off to the next sister. This is sort of a competition…to see who’s arm can last the longest. So far, the mom is winning.
As the apples go through the food mill, the sauce will come out the bottom. SO MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS OVER A LARGE BOWL! When I have a bowl full of apple sauce, we ladle it into jars and then water bath it for 20 minutes.
It really was that quick and that easy. Of course, many hands make light work. That is one of my favorite parts.
When fall and harvest come around, my girls and I are always together in the kitchen. It is something that I treasure.
I hope you treasure your time with your kids in the kitchen too. Many memories are made and stories are shared.
