Easily Recover Sofa Pillows in 15 Minutes to Make Like New, Plus How To Wash Throw Pillows

Do you have old sofa or decorative throw pillows that you would like to do something with?  Well, we stumbled upon this easy tutorial on how to recover an old throw pillow in 15 minutes or less.

It is a very easy process, you can save your dime and save your pillows.  In fact, this idea is so great, that finding thrift store pillows and recovering them is even a great idea for an affordable home decor option.  Every time I look at the prices of throw pillows, I am shocked! Buying them at the thrift store is the only way I have purchased them! I have recovered pillows a couple of times from old pillows.  The great thing is that you don’t have to buy matching pillows because your fabric cover is what you want to match your decor and furniture too.

But, if you do buy used decorative pillows (like we just did recently), you may want to give them a cleaning so that odors and bacteria (even if you can’t see or smell any!) are zapped and your pillows are fresh before recovering.  This is also a great idea for your old throw pillows and pillows you’ve had in basements or storage.

How To Clean Throw Pillows

• The first thing you need to figure out is what type of material it is? If it is leather, silk, suede or wool – you cannot just simply wash them. This will ruin them.  If your’s is this material, many will wipe clean with a very, very slightly damp cloth.  You can also spray with a fabric refresher and then place outside (away from sun) to “air refresh.”
• If your throw pillow has a cover that can be removed and washed, then this is probably the best option, following the pillow’s tag instructions.
• If the insides are pillow like fluff, you cannot wash.  However, if you have a steam setting on your dryer or a steamer, these are both great ways to steam clean your pillows.
• If the interior is foam, you can take the foam out of the cover and soak the foam piece in water with a little bit of mild detergent. Then rinse and squeeze the excess water and let it completely air dry.
• Also, many pillows can just simply be washed on the delicate cycle of your machine with mild detergent like our homemade sensitive laundry detergent.  
• One easy way to refresh is with a fabric refresher spray and placed outside out of the sun! This alone will do wonders!

*The #1 thing to do is to see if your pillow has washing instructions and follow those before you do anything else.  Then you can try any of the above.
