- 1 bag of organic cerealy hearts
- 3-lb bag of organic yams
- 1 bunch organic radishes
- 1 head of mystery showy vegetable???? HELP!!
We have no idea what this is!! We are not sure if it is in the lettuce family, onion family or what? Does anyone know!?!? Would love to find out what it is so that we can find out how to incorporate it into our menu this week!
Each week that we have purchased a basket from our produce co-op, we have ended up with something that we have never purchased before and it has been fun to try new things and find new favorites! Once we find out what this is, maybe we can enjoy it too 😉
Also, see our grocery trip to Target earlier in the week to see all that we bought this week! How did you do??

Anice? thats what it looks like does it smell like black licorice?
thriftycas
Actually, it doesn’t have a smell at all, which is part of the reason that I ruled out onion family. Thrifty Al was thinking the lettuce/cabbage family due to the lack of smell and the shape of the root.

Apparently anise and fennel are in the same family as well. Anise is commonly confused as fennel; generally with anise only the seeds are eaten whereas the whole fennel plant is consumed. I’m glad we’re getting this figured out!! Thanks Lisa!!!

You rock! Thanks for the information!! I was reading how to prepare it and we will see how we can incorporate it this week!! Thank you so much 😉
Jackie
Yes, it’s fennel – and every time I have cooked with this, it has been so, so good. Enjoy!
lisa
no problem glad to helP!!! let us all know how it turns out!
Barbara
Definitely fennel! And for trivia buffs (should be easy now) what was the only veggie in the original Star Wars movie?
thriftyal
Wow….this one is tough! When you say it should be easy now, are you insinuating it was fennel?! Of course, my first reaction was to think of Luke snacking on a celery stick on the way to the bar when we were first introduced to Hans Solo!
thriftyal
Ok, Aunt Beru was steaming fennel. I admit…I cheated. You truly are a trivia buff!!

That is indeed fennel. I personally like to use it in pot roasts. roasting it sweetens it a bit and tastes wonderful.
Cindy
I like to roast it with chicken and other root veggies (your yams???) I put them in a lage baking dish coat them with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Yummy!
